“Strange Fruit” by Abel Meerpol, a story is told of a strange fruit hanging on the trees, the strange fruit of lynched bodies. Meerpol uses this intense type of imagery to hit the reader with the reality and depth of racism in the South, as a way of turning the mood of the poem from shocking into sadness. Although at times the poem uses phrases like “scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh” (line 7), meanwhile, they are quickly contrasted with line like “then the sudden scent of burning flesh” (line 8).
