Kendra Harness: Deaf Artist Analysis
People say that a picture or piece of artwork is worth a thousand words. That seems to hold true to Kendra Harness’ artwork. Kendra Harness is a deaf artist, who produced a piece of art by the name of Positive/Negative, made in 1989. Positive/Negative profoundly shows physical deaf experience, it focuses on the eyes and it includes blue and white, with one eye being in a negative format and the other not. Positive/Negative displays deaf experience in a physical way.

Chuck Baird was born deaf on February 22, 1947, in Kansas City. He had three deaf sisters as well. Both his mother and father were hearing and it was discovered through medical testing that he and his sisters probably had Pendred Syndrome which caused them to be born death. Chuck Baird’s father was a hard working mechanic and his mother was a Red Cross nurse before she married his father. In the book Soundscapes by Shelemay, it talks about the different ways where people use the music to mark segments of the life cycle. An experience that I have that is a great example of this is, during the Christmas season my family and other close relatives gather together each year to sing songs, have food and act out the story of how Jesus was born. This is what is known as “Posadas,” which is similar to a party that people from Mexico perform as part of their tradition when Christmas is about to arrive. The “Muscle Shoals Sound” has been recognizable from the years of W.C. Handy, a Florence man that was among the first to ever popularize the blues sound more than seventy years ago to recent Grammy winner Jason Isbell; as well as everyone in between who adds or has added to the area’s prestigious “sound.” Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area (2016) states that more than a dozen record companies have opened in the Shoals area since Tune Records opened in the 1950’s and became the first record company in Alabama, but the majority of the music attention is due to Rick Hall, founder of FAME studios in Florence in 1959. According to FAME (2016) and the city of Muscle Shoals (2016), the studio moved to Muscle Shoals in 1961 and quickly Muscle Shoals became known as “The hit recording capital of the world.” Artists such as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, and Lynyrd Skynryd are among the shortlists that have recorded in the Shoals area. FAME’s website (2016), states that FAME record company has been involved in the recording or publishing for over 350 million copies worldwide over the past 50 years.
Savannah Live Musical Analysis
Savannah Live was a musical preformance held in one of the oldest continuing theater halls in the nation. The theater, appropiately named the Historic Savannah Theater, origionally opened in 1818, yet do to years of wear and tear and several fires, the modern theater was retrofitted to look like its 1940s, art-deco self. Although the stage was in the traditional Proscienim style, the play was anything but traditional. The stage hall itself seemed like something right out of the hay day of Broadway, with lights surrounding the procienian arch, red velvet chairs and carpet, the hall was like a time caplse bringing me back into the 20th centry. Mimicing the transformations of the hall throughout the years, the musical took the audience on a journey through musical, and theatrical history.

What was your experience and feelings about watching it? Throughout the documentary film Through Deaf Eyes, I felt amazed by deaf culture. The deaf culture is a versatile, rich, and unique community that more people need to be aware of. When the film was covering the transition of ASL schools to oral only I mostly felt ashamed of my own culture.

Introduction Roger’s and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is arguably one of the most well known films that many can admit to watching at least once in their lifetime. People all around the world have found this musical inspiring, as it documents growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II. This incredibly well written film is based on the story of the Von Trapp family who escaped Austria when the Nazis invaded it during the war. Part of what made this movie so interesting on so many different accounts was the music that accompanied the vivid and exciting scenes. Without music, many could agree that our world would be a sad, quiet, dull and depressing place.
