This shows how Blanche is self conscious of her looks and age, and how she likes to distort reality to portray falsities. This shows how Blanche likes to distort her true image, and this ultimately gets Mitch suspicious of her and who she really is. We see him as a compassionate soul, who is willing to read to a person that has just been kicked out of the school. Because Holden says that he reads a lot, we can infer that he may be an introvert and may love to spend time with himself.
