Writing is great until you have to sit down and do it. The sentences never seem to flow into the brilliant paragraphs I had planned for them, and descriptions never build the picture the way it was drawn up in my head. I have never been entirely confident in my ability, probably for good reason. That said, I have always had a love hate relationship with writing; I can sit down and crank out a report on my high school’s basketball team in a half an hour, on the other hand I had to write limericks in my seventh grade English class and I am still working on them.
I had never been comfortable or particularly skilled at writing in the past. Writing has never been something that has come easy to me. I always viewed it as an act of punishment or an induced pain from spiteful teachers. I thought English teachers lived to fail students due to grammar mistakes, but as intense as that sounds, it is not true.
The tone of my writing has definitely changed over my years of being a writer. Although reading has always been my strong subject, I’ve come to love writing. I would describe my standard tone as a mix of using figurative language techniques such as imagery and having a sort of sarcastic diction. I love using figurative language techniques such as imagery because I feel like it makes reading more vivid to the reader. I like to ready books by authors that use imagery because it makes the book like a movie in my mind.
I’m quite scatterbrained, so if I don’t have a freakishly mechanical outline it will be a lot harder for me to formulate my ideas further down the line. What I’ll do is have two documents open at the same time: one a nice outline with some classy bullet points, the other a disorganized hodgepodge of links, quotes, and incomprehensible sentence fragments. Somehow, those synthesize and form a workable piece of writing. I much prefer making my notes digitally opposed to taking them on paper. The finality of writing things down physically means that I end up deliberating for far too long over my choice of words, which really slows me down.
Process Narrative What I intended for the essay to have on the reader is to inform and entertain the what is stated on the essay. I like to give the two sides of coin when I talk about a certain subject. I want the reader not just only see the one side that I might agree on but also another take on it to see if the reader might differ from from opinion. The purpose for that is to make the audience think a little for themselves on their own and make them wonder about the topic and what it really is. My decisions into making a draft for this essay wasn’t all the great.
Have you ever got stuck while reading and can’t get the words written clearly on paper? That was one of my main issues when it came to writing because I did not vision what I wanted to write and that led my essays to not have much detail because I was setting limitations that could have been prevented. When limitations are thrown to a student with a fixed mindset they will not bother to break it apart or fully understand a concept. This occurs because they believe intelligence comes naturally and if in the end their product does not appear the way they wanted it to, their work will be as vague as possible. On the other hand, a growth mindset will do the opposite, they realize that intelligence is a product of effort and interest in their education.
As each writing assignments is graded, I realize how much I have improved as a writer by the grade and the fewer mistakes that I have made in them. As each time the grammatical and spelling mistakes are fewer on each paper. I want to share how I have grown as a writer on second semester by being in class and reflecting on my previous assignments. Even though there weren’t many writing assignments this semester. There were some assignments that I have done poorly on.
Since I grow up speaking Chinese, I accepted the fact that my second language will never be as good as my first. I didn’t even bother to improve myself since I still had a passing grade for English in high school. I told myself that I have only started learning English a few years ago and I will get better within time. However, I have not improved as much as I hoped to because I never identified my problems as a writer. After taking College Writing R1A class, I finally discovered my weaknesses.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
Like I said writing was hard for me. I think the reason being that I was able to read well so I didn 't have much to write about other than the stuff I heard. Even then, If I did write was wasn 't going to be able to read it. Now that I could do both better my doors have open
Writing is a vital part of life. Before the creation of written language human communication was limited to verbal, in-person conversations. Everything changed when writing allowed thoughts and ideas to travel farther and more efficient than ever before. Writing is a talent that we learn at an early age and only hone as we proceed through our academic careers. This being said, as with any talent every writer has strengths and weaknesses.
Writing can help you in life through ways you never thought possible. Once you find out the importance of writing it might make you think twice about learning good writing skills. Knowing how to write well is a crucial skill to have, and I hope that everyone can take the time to learn some. Writing, in my opinion can be very therapeutic.
Writing is a skill that is necessary for life. Writing gives you the ability to express yourself in ways that talking could not. From a young age, I loved to write. Writing acted as a scapegoat to me. It allowed me to vanish from reality.
