The United States of America is an organized system of rights. The country is known for freedom, opportunity, civil rights, and its many crisis’s. Along with pressures like immigration, gun control, and drug abuse, one of America’s main problems is their fuel dependency. America depends on many other countries for their energy sources. The most common imported source America needs including oil comes from foreign countries. All of America’s problems are results of the system put into place by the American government. This complex system handles mechanisms and works together to have a structural society. One can say America’s system is based off a structural functionalism theory. “Structural Functionalism is a broad perspective in sociology …show more content…
As the number one consumer, the United States cannot support its fuel necessities as a nation. The country consumes more than it produces. The United States is reliant on other countries to sustain a structural society. America cannot rely on their own resources to supply the demand of oil needed by the population. The country must undergo multiple changes to resolve these issues. “If America is to remain prosperous and secure in the 21st century, we must make significant progress toward ending our oil dependence. Improvements in fuel economy are a valuable move in the right direction, and President Obama’s announcement of tougher rules for trucks last week should be applauded. But efficiency alone is not enough. We need fuel diversity in the transportation sector to shield our economy from swings in global oil prices,” said Dennis Blair a New York Times author. America can make changes by depending on natural fuel sources. Fracking and practicing ecological lifestyles can affect the fuel dependency America has with foreign countries. Fracking is the process of drilling and injecting fluid deep into the Earth at high pressure in order to receive more natural gases. This task is extremely dangerous because chemicals can contaminate water sources. Changing from gas-operated vehicles to electrically operated vehicles can alter a change as well. The average American would not rely on their local gas station to supply for their everyday transportation. The demand for oil and gas decreases, as the everyday American consumer no longer relies on it. As the demand for oil decreases, the need for the United States government to supply it reduces equally. If going green becomes normality in the American structural society, the dependence on foreign trade is no longer
