The California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy evaluates the students writing sample and decipher whether the students are measuring to his/her grade level. Student 5A literacy measures at a fifth-grade level, the student integrate information from several sources such as class notes, books, and online websites to examine several topics such as JFK speech, America landing on the moon and winning the space race which demonstrates the student ability to build knowledge from researching a topic. Student 5A either summarized or paraphrase his/her research, for example, they asked the students at Rice University to study hard and join NASA to help build the rocket but did not cite the material used for the research. …show more content…

The student determines the main ideas by reading or listening to printed or digital sources and comprehended and integrated the information into text, for example, “John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Rice Universty speech encouraged people to go to the moon.” The student used quotations, supportive detail, and definitions to develop the topic, for example, “To begin with the Space Race started with a bet. The bet was to see who could be the first one to get to the moon.” The main topics and themes were clearly stated in the introduction paragraph, for example, “John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Speech at Rice University, America landing on the moon, and America winning the space race.” The information that was gathered was either paraphrased or summarized but the student did not cite his/her work. The student connected ideas and information using proper language and specific vocabulary to explain the topic and themes, for example, “America had finally gone to the moon and had beat the Russians in the space race.” The organization of the paper was clear and coherent with multiple paragraphs to address the task, purpose and the reader which was to write a paper about the space
