In the eighteen years of my life, I have done many things to achieve my goals. Though my objective tends to change in detail, it does not budge from the whole. My goals consist of gaining knowledge of the world and people, and provide myself a path to follow while changing the world a step at a time. Although my aims sounds a bit farfetched and difficult, it is what I intend to accomplish. Notable classes/activities are rare, yet the ones that I take note of has influenced my life choices and views of the world. The Gatesville Band program, while a rigorous and demanding extra-curricular, is a great influence on strength of character and discipline. Day and night goes by without hard work from the band. While not a mandatory extra-curricular such as band, Student Council is no less intense or demanding. Because it is a student-based organization, teachers are merely guides and not leaders. The leadership falls upon the students themselves. Dealing within a high school setting is difficult to manage at times due to the lack of cooperation within the school’s students. Despite this lack of cooperation, Student Council nonetheless tries to change the way things are. To combat against bullying the organization promotes anti-bullying awareness, calling out on people bullying others or standing by and watching it happen. To help the Special Education department and its students feel welcomed and cherished, the organization host events such as the Special Olympics for its students to participate in and have fun. To aid teachers in their workload, Student Council members volunteer their services. With each day, change occurs and progress comes forth. While a small organization that is, at times, scoffed at for being too ‘goody-two shoes,’ Student Council perseveres and brings a steady change through positive attitude and kindness. The student-lead organization has taught me the inherent value of compassion and respect towards others, giving me the opportunity to further my understanding of life and its inhabitants in general. To bring forth change is to not force it; true and good change is a gradual process. To bring progress, one had to first understand the root of the problem.
