The idea of scientific authority has played an impactful role throughout industrialized society. As the production of knowledge through scientific research is constantly developing, new discoveries have a major influence in policies and practices that influence both social and scientific structures. In a seminar held by Dr. Hayes Bautista, a professor for Chicano Studies Community Medicine 106, he discussed health within the Latino population and his research on The Latino Epidemiological Paradox in terms of science, theory, and data. His research not only questions scientific research and health models, but pose questions that challenge systems surrounding healthcare.
Today there are tons of drugs being brought in from Mexico to the US. Whether it be by land, sea, or underground, drugs are becoming a problem for the US. The Latino community is hit by this because they have either no option, or they are looking for a way to make a quick buck. Most Latino communities have gangs which in turn deal drugs. There is a very high rate at which young males of Latino background are dropping out of high school and in some parts of the U.S the dropout percentage gets to be as high as 60%. There are many reasons for this social issue using the Social Pathology and we will explore the answer to this problem. We can look at these young Latino males in all parts of the country as being deviant. The reason this social problem exists is because of their deviance. So, how is it that all of these males from this particular ethnicity from all parts of the U.S are deviant in the same way?
Based on the current state of the Latino television media the recent research suggests a misconception/ misrepresentation of the Latino community on television. It is evident that the broadcast media outlets provide a limited amount of information that satisfies the actual needs of the Latino community. I conducted a brief literature review to determine the status of television programming and Latino community’s efforts to address the messages with regards to social equity. Minorities are expanding their vicinity in the United States and will keep on doing as such for years to come. The Latino population is driving these changes. While today one of each eight inhabitants of the United States is Latino, it is anticipated that Latinos could represent one of each five occupants. Immigration from Latin America and the attendant growth of the nation 's Hispanic or Latino population are two of the most important and controversial developments in the recent history of the United States.
The Latino community is the most rapidly growing minority group in the United States. However, it is also one of the minority group that have faced many barriers in their educational opportunities throughout its history in this nation. The United States is knowing because of it offers equal opportunities for everyone, yet a poor quality education still exists in many of our Latino community schools. According to the CDC Hispanics of Mexican origin make up approximately 17 percent of the population in the United States. They are the one of the largest cultural populations in U.S. has risen dramatically over last four decades. There are a variety of reason that lead to health disparities for the Hispanic community these reasons then lead to the individuals not obtaining healthcare. First, it was reported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2012 that 29.1 percent of the Hispanic do not have health insurance. Therefore conflict theory defines substance abuse as primarily being a problem that is a result of structural inequality and class conflict. Corporations such as the LCBO and various pharmacies financially benefit the most from drug use and also obtain the power to keep it available. In response to political, social, and power inequality, political and business groups are able to influence society’s depiction of drugs and their users. Many substances were considered legal but public opinion and the law altered when drugs were associated with ethnic minorities and crime. Conflict theorists argue that marginalized groups, the lower class, and other alienated groups are more likely to suffer negative ramifications as a result of addiction.
