Journal Assignment Scenario #1 1. An elderly couple returns home one evening to find their house has been broken into, and their car is gone. After calling the police, they learn money has been taken and also some jewellery and alcohol. Later that evening, the police arrest two suspects: 1. A man and a woman who broke in looking for money to buy drugs. OR 2. The elderly couple’s sixteen-year-old grandson and his fifteen-year-old friend. He is a white male, 29 years old, unemployed, and has a record for sexual misconduct. She does not know the offender; he claims to have randomly followed her home one evening from the bus stop, and returned the next evening to assault her. OR 2. Learns he is her ex-husband whom she is separated from. He accessed their home through a broken window in the basement, and waited for his ex-wife to go to bed. He said he assaulted her because she had begun seeing another man. Question 2: Is the victim’s experience more severe, violent, or traumatic in one case than the other? Why or why not? a. A sexual assault by an unknown stranger would involve a sense of the unknown. This would bring the victim to believe that they are not safe in their own home or neighborhood. They may feel that anyone can access their home and commit the offence again. In the case of the ex-husband the victim knew who the offender was. They had dated in the past and the victim may feel that because it was her ex-husband it isn’t as bad if it had been a stranger.
