Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to analyze the effects of substrate concentration on the activity of the catalase. Introduction The cells in our body are constantly making poisonous chemicals. These chemicals known as enzymes, are used to break down those positions chemicals into harmless substances. Enzymes are protein molecules produced by living cells and acts as a biological reaction that increases the rate of reactions. In a enzyme-catalyzed reaction, the substance binds reversibly to the active site of the enzyme. The activity of the enzyme can be affected if any substance blocks or changes the shape of the active site. They are responsible for thousands of metabolic processes that sustain life. Enzymes are highly selective …show more content…
Once that has been completed, being by getting three test tubes label them test tubes 1, 2 and 3, then place them in the test tube rack so you can carefully add the different drops of potato juice and hydrogen peroxide. Begin filling test tube tube 1 to the 0.5 cm mark with potato juice and 1.5 cm of hydrogen peroxide, tube 2 was filled to the 1cm of potato juice and 1cm hydrogen peroxide, and tube 3 was filled 1.5 cm of potato juice and 2 cm of hydrogen peroxide. Make sure to watch each test tube mixtures very carefully and record what happens, stir each test tube for about 30 seconds or until all the potato substance has been dissolved from the bottom. Then finally, allow the test tubes to sit for 5 minutes at room temperature, once the time has elapsed each test tube will have different height of chemical reactions. Take your ruler and measure the amount of bubbles in each test tube in cm, then record the results in the
