The narrator’s changing understanding of the inevitability of death across the two sections of the poem illustrates the dynamic and contrasting nature of the human
Thoughts in regards to suicide often include empathy for the dead, and wonder as to what drove the person to end their life. All too often, people ignore a rather important consideration: the thoughts and feelings of those left behind. The loved ones are left with the remorse, despondence, and grieving, while the dead are absolved of their worldly anguish. In “The Grieving Never Ends”, Roxanne Roberts employs a variety of rhetorical tactics including metaphors, imagery, tone, and syntax to illustrate the indelible effects of suicide on the surviving loved ones. Roberts effectively uses metaphors to express the complex, abstract concepts around suicide and human emotion in general.
Always Something More Beautiful “Always Something More Beautiful” is a poem by Stephen Dunn, born in Forest Hills, NY. I got attracted to this poem, because it reminded me when I was at the Regionals for a Cross-Country race and reflected how humans’ life can be fair or beautiful. The cluster “time, clock, finish” clarifies for a measurement that refers to a competitive race.
Alanah Cooper Michelle Ardila ENC 1102 September 18, 2016 The thought of helping people gives everyone a sense of purpose and joy. People strive to help the poor in many ways so the homeless could achieve a better life. This poem brings you the debate between service and charity. Service is more hands on and offers a person’s time and talent.
Poetry Analysis Once the poem “History Lesson” was written numerous poetry foundations celebrated it for many reasons. “History Lesson” not only makes an impact on literature today it has also impacted people also. This poem inspires people and moves them to the point to where they can find a personal connection to the poem itself and to the writer. Not only does it hold emotional value for those who were victimized and those whose family were victimized by the laws of segregation, but the poem is also celebrated for its complexity. Death is inevitable within the human life cycle. Some poems speaking of death, however very different in meaning, are “Don’t Fear The Reaper,” “Dust In The Wind,” and “Thanatopsis.” Now it’ll be better explained once we get into the meat of the essay, but just trust me when I say while the all relate to death. They all have a very different end message about death. “Don’t Fear The Reaper,” is a song which wildly accepts death.
Shaun Duetsch Ms. Bernard ENG 102-02 3 April 23 The Complexity of Loss There are few constants in life, one of them is the inevitability of death. One interesting part of that inevitability, surprisingly, is not related to the very person who is dying. It is that the people around the dead have to adjust to their absence. In the poems After Great Pain, a Formal Feeling Comes and To an Athlete
Figurative language is the glue to all poetry writing. It is what holds poetry together and without it, poetry would be plain and boring. Figurative language adds depth and creates a whole new dimension full of possibilities that readers can enjoy. It is the most powerful tool that an author can use because it can be used in a way no other piece of literature can. It makes poems unique and the utilization of figurative language amplifies the meaning of the main message of the author.
The poem, “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe dramatizes the theme of everlasting love. The use of contrasting diction effectively conveys this message. For example, the speaker states, “That the wind came out of the cloud by night, / Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee” (26-26). Poe uses the wind to represent a disease, such as tuberculosis. In addition, the choice of the words, “chilling” and “killing” and the use of cacophony emphasize Annabel Lee’s death and the effect it had on the speaker.
The poets Heaney and Dickinson both present an image of death through the use of a first-person perspective in the poems “Mid-Term Break”, and “Because I Could Not Stop For Death”. Although both use a narrative style, they create a contrasting impression of death, with one portraying cruelty and suddenness, while the other is calming, polite and an inevitable part of life. In “Mid-Term Break”, a range of techniques such as strong symbolic images, the feeling of isolation, and a detached manner is used to convey death and grief, evoking sympathy from the reader. Contrastingly, death is presented as gentlemanly through the use of various techniques, including a retrospective and narrative style. Through the use of contrasts between expectations and reality, “Mid-Term Break” portrays death as cruel and sudden.
MY PRIVATE BATTLE Living with chronic illness and pain is something that isn’t easily understood by people who are not going through the same thing. Moreover, the effects of illness are an emotional and personal daily battle. All of us with Fibromyalgia are not the same!! Not one of us has the exact same symptoms. We have a lot of the same, some are worse, some are less, but no two are exactly alike!

In this free verse poem, I wrote about my experience with an incident that occur where I thought I was going to die. I started this poem off by telling the readers that this incident occur when I was in my youth. I used the word youth instead child because when you think of a child, you think of a five year old kid with no life experiences. With this in mine, when the readers reads the word youth. Youth could have either a good or bad connotative meaning to it depending on the experiences the reader has or had with that word, leading to me choosing the word youth instead child.
