Teenagers and young adults have ended their lives more often than they die from cancer, heart disease, AIDS etc. There is an average of 3,470 attempts from young people from grades 9-12 in the U.S on a daily basis. Four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warning signs. Suicide will also affect family members and friends and will make them sad or depressed. Teen suicide happens because of bullying/peer pressure, mental illness/stress, and emotional problems/depression. Bullying can be extremely painful for young people. Most teens who attempt to suicide suffer from depression, bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder. About 5 percent of teens are suffering from major depression at any one time and about 30 percent of teens with depression also develop a substance abuse problem. Teens with depression seem to catch physical illnesses more often than other teens. Female teens develop depression twice as often than male teens do. Most teens do not spend a long time planning to kill themselves. To avoid depression, you should try to make new friends, participate in sports, jobs, school activities or even your hobbies, just to avoid thinking about being depressed. An investigation has shown that 130 suicides in people under 20 have revealed bereavement, school pressures, physical illnesses, and bullying were the reasons why it happened. About 25 percent of male teens and about 19 percent of female teens have avoided or refused to deal with their stress. About 31 percent of teens reported feeling overwhelmed. Girls report that they experience stress more than boys. Family members and friends are both sources of stress and social support in teens’ lives.
