“Let me tell you the secret that has lead me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” -Louis Pasteur. Forge, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about Curzon, a boy that turns into a young man as he faces the hardships of Valley Forge in the winter.
Although often used interchangeably, disease and illness differ fundamentally in their meanings and implications. Disease is the commonly thought of concept in which a person suffers due to a physiological or psychological ailment, while illness refers to a culmination of physical, emotional and social suffering of a person. Disease is perceived as the phenomena that affects an organism, while illness affects not only the patient but also their loved ones and community. This distinction is vividly apparent in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, in which Anne Fadiman relays the approaches to a Hmong child named Lia’s epilepsy by her family and her doctors as well as the tumultuous interaction between these caregivers. It is interesting to understand how Hmong culture and a doctor’s

One night, one party, one person, one call, that is all it takes to change somebody’s identity and shape them into the person they truly are. Melinda Sordino is the victim of a horrible night that changed her life. In the novel speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Melinda is faced with many challenges. Melinda attended a party the summer before ninth grade. She wasn’t thinking about the consequences that come with drinking, she was not thinking about how one little action could ruin her relationship with those around her,one action that could shape her identity into who she truly is, one action that she would be to traumatized to tell anyone about.
The topic of my Portfolio will be how Laurie Halse Anderson uses characterization, a certain style(with symbolism and tone) and 1st person point of view, to convey her theme. My thesis will look like: In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the author uses characterization, a certain style(created by symbolism and tone), and an artistic take on 1st person point of view to convey her theme to her readers. I want to include specific examples of how she accomplished this; for instance: she accomplishes her characterization by giving the characters such spot on personalities that a similar real life person would have(your stereotypical teacher, dad, mom, daughter, and student), along with how her characters change over time, and how they do
A fire sparks and the grand bird burns, leaving nothing but ashes. From these ashes, a new bird is born, restarting the cycle. Thus is the story of a phoenix, the immortal and legendary fire bird. Fire and water commonly appear in literature and can represent positive or negative symbols. Water is usually associated with baptism, rebirth, cleansing, but as an element it can also represent negative signs of death and destruction.
In the book Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, Lauren’s views on the world change throughout the book. When she goes from a safer life than others to living on the streets with no knowledge of what to do, she must reevaluate her beliefs. In the beginning of the book, she is very morally right, but towards the end she does what she must do to survive. As she lived more on the street, her views became more flexible, and she gained a deeper understanding of life on the street. Her views are also heavily influenced by outside forces that she grew up with.
The novel’s protagonist, Janie Crawford, a woman who dreamt of love, was on a journey to establish her voice and shape her own identity. She lived with Nanny, her grandmother, in a community inhabited by black and white people. This community only served as an antagonist to Janie, because she did not fit into the society in any respect. Race played a large factor in Janie being an outcast, because she was black, but had lighter skin than all other black people due to having a Caucasian ancestry.
For me looking for a good book to read is difficult. Don’t even start me on finding a good book to write an essay on, some books are a really good book to read, but an awful book to do an essay or review on. When I first started reading Legend By: Marie Lu seemed to at first blend into the good read but bad review section, but as time went on and I kept reading the book I gradually started reading it, it began to show some signs of being a really good essay book. Overall, this book was captivating and was more unique than most dystopian books that I have read. This novel was an absolute page turner.
Ernest Hemingway's short story, "Hills Like White Elephants", published in 1927, portrays a tense conversation between a man, called "the American", and a girl named "Jig", the only named character, against the scenic backdrop of a train station on Ebro River with its dusty, white hills looming in the distance. Though their conversation never specifies what their conflict is, we can infer that they are speaking about the termination of a pregnancy i.e., an abortion, via the use of words like "operation". Through this conversation and the American's treatment of Jig, we see the catalyst for Jig's transformation from a naive little girl who cannot even order her own drinks into a determined young woman able to make her own serious decisions for

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sense perception as “perception by the senses as distinguished from intellectual perception”. During the early stages of life, tasting, smelling, hearing, touching, and seeing are the main methods used for understanding how the world works. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, introduces the readers to characters who mainly perceive the world through sense perception. A young girl, Pecola, haunted by other characters’ perceptions of her, aligns beauty with blue eyes. The structure of the novel leaves the readers to perceive Pecola through the eyes of other characters; rarely how Pecola perceives the world.
The essay is divided into two sections with the first part of the essay providing information about crucial aspects needed for an in-depth understanding of the poem and analysis of it whereas the second part of the essay will focus on a contemporary assimilation of the Yeats’ work specifically on the comparison to the Sinead O’Connor song “Troy”. Before analyzing “No second Troy” it is important to be aware of three crucial aspects that relate to the poem. The first important element for a better understanding of this poem is the Trojan War and the events related to it. In ancient Greek history, the war of Troy was fought over Hellen of Sparta who was the most beautiful woman at the time.
