BIG Question: Which civilization do you think accomplished the most during this time period (4000 BCE to 2500 BCE) and WHY do you think they were able to do so? -We think that the Sumerian civilization accomplished the most. Our Learning Team group decided that the Sumerian civilization accomplished the most during the selected time period (4000 BCE to 2500 BCE). This is because they were the first civilization to rise and they invented a lot of advanced technology. In addition, they lived near two rivers, which supported farming. Compared to other civilizations, such as Egypt and India, we think that Sumerians accomplished more during the time period. We think that the Sumerian civilization accomplished the most during the designated time period because of many reasons. Sumerians lived in a semiarid climate, and in order to survive, they had to make what we call “Forced innovation.” They lived near two rivers, and even though the soil near the rivers were fertile, Sumerian people still had to develop advanced irrigation systems to water their crops. First, it is the oldest civilization of the three. It existed during the beginning of the designated time period. Meanwhile, India was formed much later. Additionally, only Egypt’s Old Kingdom falls into the given time period. Because it was formed much earlier, Sumer could accomplish more than the other civilizations. Plus, thanks to Sumer’s fertile land near the rivers known as the Fertile Crescent, Sumerians could easily farm crops. This allowed them to have surpluses and trade with other civilizations. Furthermore, even though all three civilizations had rivers nearby and built irrigation systems, Sumer built the most advanced irrigation systems because their rivers always flooded at unexpected times.
