During the Mesopotamia era (4,000 -2,350 B.C.E.), cities were built to help support the population, the inventions of everyday chores and issues (i.e. wheels, canals, pottery), and the rise of monarchy became the hierarchy and the most widespread form of government. Society was under a patriarchy – which the male population dominated political, social, and economic life.
The beliefs and religion of the Sumerians and Egyptians lead to stable conditions for civilizations. The Sumerians were polytheistic, people believing in many gods. There has been over 3,000 gods and goddesses identified. For Sumerians, the most prominent building in the city was the temple. Ziggurats are massive towers dedicated to the chief god or goddess of their city which also stored surplus of food.
The Sumer region was in Mesopotamia, which is now the current Iraq. This area is very famous due to writing which was the cuneiform script on the clay tablets. This development in the criminal law reflected and promoted new views of prostitutes as irredeemably deviant women. Having "fallen from virtue," the prostitute was considered permanently degenerate, and now capable of any crime.' Hence, female criminals were considered more vile than male offenders, since one violation was sufficient to lead to a life of crime. Thus, prostitution became ideologically linked to every form of corruption, crime, and vice. Different societies view women in different lights. Therefore, a woman’s position is greatly different from one society to the other. The societies in question do not necessarily have to exist at the same time. Even in the same time frame, two societies could exist, where one treat women as equals to men, and another that treats women differently than men, whether better or worse. The societies in question are: Mesopotamia, Greece, China, Rome & Europe, and this essay aims to study different societies’ viewpoints on women, and to compare and contrast them against each other.
Patriarchy is the typical system in a society where the male holds the most power over a female. Multiple civilizations have been this way for centuries. Prostitution Prostitution can be defined as the provision of sexual services for money. The word “prostitute” became common in the of 18th century. During the ancient times this kind of services had been supplied for economic rewards mainly by courtesans, concubines or slaves. Courtesans and concubines often held high positions in traditional societies. The main feature of modern prostitution is that women and men tend not to know each other.

Prostitution can be defined as “The act or practice of engaging in sexual intercourse for money” (Deigh, 2010, p.29). Prostitution is the oldest profession of all. However the ethics of prostitution is still unclear between many societies.
Prostitutes are people, too. Prostitution is such a complex issue; no one ever scratches the surface of sex work. Prostitution is commonly known as the world 's oldest profession yet has been outlawed in forty-nine out of the fifty states in the United States. Legal-prostitution can require all sex workers to practice safe sex as well as get tested frequently to reduce the spread of diseases. Reduction of violence against women starts with the availability of sex.
