Power is addictive to humankind, people can not help but crave more than their share. Night by Elie Wiesel is a memoir that bears witness to the abusiveness of control. The book follows the author, Elie Wiesel, in his horrific experiences of the Holocaust and how he survived. In many situations people with higher status took advantage of people subordinate to them. Although many believe that fear is a person’s main downfall, power is an extremely manipulative source that causes the decline of people who have it and who do not.
I attended the concert in Punta Gorda on October 19th at The Charlotte Performing Arts Center. The concert presented the Port Charlotte High School Wind Orchestra followed by Florida Gulf Coast University Wind Orchestra. FGCU’s wind orchestra was conducted by Dr. Rod Chesnutt. The first piece they played was Danse Bacchanale (1877) by Camille Saint-Sales from “Samson and Deliliah”. The final piece performed was Jug Blues and Fat Pickin (1986) by Don Freund.
The musical also gives the audience more to think about with its different viewpoint of “The Wicked Witch” and how she isn’t so wicked which can be taken into the context of our everyday lives with the people around us. In conclusion, The Wizard of Oz and Wicked are both very well known broadway musicals. Following Charles II’s coronation, there was an artistic renaissance in England with a preference for “scenery to poetic illusion, heroic couplets to blank verse… They demanded music, dancing and masques in the latest French styles.” To this end, The Fairy Queen was created, a semi-opera with “singing, dancing and machines interwoven, after the manner of an opera.” To clarify, a ‘semi-opera’ is a term which was used to apply to Restoration pieces which combined spoken plays with masque-esque episodes which employed the use of singing and dancing characters. When music occured in these masques, it was typically following either a love scene or that of the supernatural.
In the short stories Gwilan's Harp by Ursula K, LeGuin, The Last Leaf by O. Henry, and The Washwoman by Isaac Singer, each character experiences a variation of loss. Ursula K LeGuin wrote Gwilan's Harp about a young lady who possesses a beautiful, unique, like no other, harp; on course to a day of music Gwilan's life changes dramatically due to a tragic loss. in The Last Leaf, O. Henry writes about a sickly girl whose endangered life is saved by the loss of another. Finally, in The Washwoman, Isaac Singer creates a story about a family and their washwoman. The family grows to love the Washwoman, so when the woman tragically does not return the family mourns.

Each of the characters in the stories experience the loss of something special to them, such as the loss of a matchless harp, the loss of a caring son, and the unforeseen loss of a friend. In “Gwilan’s Harp” a young harpist named Gwilan has an irreplaceable, flawless harp. Unfortunately, when her harp gets crushed, Gwilan begins to struggle with the loss of her most prized possession. In Isaac Singer’s “The Washwoman” an elderly washwoman tells the Jewish family which employed her, about the loss of her adult son, not by death, but by the embarrassment of her profession.

Godinez played the harp in an intensive mood that made her performance stunning. She also played three instruments: the violin, pedal harp, lever harp –which I have never had hear before. I really like this type of music because it personally connects me with my heritage and also it is a music that I think everyone enjoys because of its uniqueness. The instruments are very old fashion and I think that is one of the reasons why many people like these types of performances. A comparison of the Beijing Opera and the Italian Opera reveals a significant contrast in almost all fundamental areas of music between the two examples. Because of cultural influences, the two performances share little commonalities, as the timbre, medium, elements of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, form and phonic structure are definitely not similar. For instance, the musical and physical performance dynamics of the Beijing opera music are forceful, the timbre is loud, tinny and harsh, the rhythm is lively and vigorous, while the Italian Opera music has a gentle dynamic, steady and rolling rhythm and an emotionally deep timbre. One commonality that is noted for both examples, is the powerful delivery of the entertainment.
Janine Jansen and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam exquisitely rendered Antonio Vivaldi’s composition. The performance featured all twelve movement broken up into four concertos. The concert featured mainly instruments from the stringed family and one harpsichord. The performance exhibited the various musical concepts envisioned by Vivaldi. Ultimately, the angelic talent of Janine Jansen gifted the audience with a breathtaking rendition.

Throughout the semester we have discussed many different Irish musical instruments all having their own importance in Irish history. One of the first instruments we discussed was the Harp. Over the years the harp has changed and been modified, one of the earliest versions of the harp was the small low-headed Irish Harp used from the 12th up till the 15th century. During these times the people of entertainment worked under the patronage by royal families, meaning that the royal family would pay them for their entertainment. Working for royal families allowed them to hold a high position in society the hierarchy went as follows: poet, lord, harpist and recite.
Development of music history from Medieval period to Baroque Period Music exists in every known cultural group of the world and it is likely to have existed among the ancient ancestral communities. Music may have started in Africa, having existed for at least 55,000 years before evolving into an essential constituent of human life. Different people have different perspectives towards music. For instance, some may take music as jazz set, an orchestral symphony, an electronic beat or even a simple thing as the chirping of birds. Music has both positive and negative effect on humans and it depends on how it is applied.
