In the last few decades, college athletes have become very popular in the United States of America. College athletes increased popularity has generated a very large some of revenue for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 2014 alone, the NCAA generated total revenue close to 1 billion dollars (Berkowitz). As a result of this increase in revenue a debate about whether or not college athletes should be compensated has started to be discussed among colleges. Every day college athletes are working hard in the classrooms to meet academic standards and in practices to keep the games competitive. There are many different ways to approach and find solutions to the problems college athletes face financially. While many people would agree that college athletes should be paid there will be a great amount of people who hold different opinions on the issue. Some opposing viewpoints believe that college athletes are already receiving a free education and do not deserve to be paid along with that. Although college athletes’ education is taken care of through their scholarship, this does not mean they do not have any other expenses. While many people believe that college athletes should be paid, there are still many questions to ask that go along with that belief. College athletes work hard academically and athletically to maintain a standard that will continue to benefit their school and make them successful. Even though it has fueled a large debate and would completely change collegiate sports, college athletes should be paid a salary due to financial struggles and exploitation they are currently facing. Athletes’ busy schedules that consist of attending class, practices, and workout sessions take up a majority of their time and do not leave much room for them to work a job to provide them with an income. After committing a majority of their time to academics and athletics, athletes do not have time to work; therefore, athletes are left without a guarantee of financial income. Lastly, everyone is reaping the benefits of the college athletes’ success except for them; this is why college athletes should be paid a salary to compensate for the exploitation they endure. If a person had a talent that they loved doing and were successful at but were not getting to enjoy the benefits as some others are, should they be paid for their hard work?
