Eighteen-year-old Hunter Sowry is a determined Jewish college freshman at The University of Alabama. He is in the engineering school on his way to achieve an exalted position in society with a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Hunter is a very mysterious young man with a forgiving heart! Constantly finding himself differing from the norms of society, his perspective on life changes fluctuates almost every day because of a powerful depressing background he can’t escape. He is not looking for pity of a crutch because he is far too independent and strong now to search for sympathy for a circumstance he cannot change. His friends and family are always left profoundly astonished by his actions and thoughts presented in certain scenarios where depression and negativity arise from a social environment. He once told me that “The only time I felt as if I had a father or a teacher was at someone else’s home.” But the part the makes me the proudest to know him is the fact that if you were to have just met Hunter, you would never have any idea what he deals with or where he has come from. He is constantly being pulled down by chemistry balances. He Suffers from a medical condition that cause depressive symptoms leaving him alone in a bubble of negativity. He constantly sees himself battling the same disease that took his father’s life. As a young boy it was a lot to juggle and still is to this day. With his dreams in keen sight, he holds them with such a tight grip because he knows how easy it is too loose track of the joys life brings. There are a couple instances in his life he freely opened up about when I asked him, “Have you ever thought about killing yourself”? There was a huge emotional drop in the interview when prompted this question, however the comfortability of a two-year close relationship kept it on track. It’s very sad to say but he cited many times where he felt the thoughts were too much. He said that “I never once acted on them because I’m not the coward my father was.” He didn’t enjoy the emotions following his words because he has moved past that time in his life and wants to forget about it.
