Habitat for Humanity
Many people do not understand what the non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity is truly about. It is commonly assumed to be an organization that builds and gives away free homes to those who are less fortunate. While Habitat for Humanity does indeed help the less fortunate find safe and affordable housing, they do not just give the homes away. Habitat for Humanity helps people by building nice homes which are affordable to them. Applicants go through a very lengthy process to become eligible for a Habitat for Humanity home. Being a Christian man who believed his future was going to be best utilized by helping others, Mr. Fuller sold all of his belongings and gave the money to the poor. He then began to re-evaluate his life and God’s plan for him. He finally settled in a Christian community near Americus, Georgia with people of similar beliefs and goals. There, he was able to develop a plan which soon made it affordable for families who struggle financially to become home owners. He was able to build homes for families with low income by soliciting large and small donations of money, material, and labor. The Christian principles and beliefs that Millard Fuller possessed were vital while laying the strong foundation of what would soon be known as Habitat for Humanity. Most of the people that help Habitat for Humanity with monetary and other needed donations are also involved as volunteers. There are numerous ways people can become involved in volunteering as there are so many needs and projects within this organization, all in the effort to building affordable housing. Some people and organizations assist by donating money and still others donate their time and experience to help build homes (“History”). Habitat for Humanity has had some very famous people such as Brad Pitt, Garth Brookes, and Trisha Yearwood who have volunteered their time to help build homes (“Corporate Sponsors”). President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn are extremely big advocates of Habitat for Humanity and have been involved in building homes as well as large corporations such as Lowe’s, DeWalt Tools, UPS, and The Home Depot also sponsor Habitat for Humanity homes (“Corporate Sponsors”). Some of these bigger businesses help by providing the needed materials for houses and buildings. Habitat for Humanity also owns many Habitat Restores where they take donations of new and used building supplies, house materials and many other items to resell.
