Part A: Battle Report When did the battle occur? From as early as December 1915, Australian, British and Canadian miners had been digging an intricate tunnel system under the enemy’s front line. A seven day preliminary bombardment was also conducted to put pressure on the enemy before the infantry assault.
The expansion of armies and militarism was a leading cause of World War 1. Although several forces created tension among the nations of Europe, militarism was the most significant for pushing countries into war. Each country that fought in the war was planning on obtaining better military strength and forces. Militarism would allow countries to develop, and if they were lucky enough, they would acquire more land. Milltirims also united the country as a whole.
The beginning of the twentieth century was fraught with tensions in Europe. Nationalism, the belief that one's country is better than all other countries, led to increased strains between nations. Ideas of imperialism, the expansion of a country to form an empire, led to the creation of colonies in areas such as the far east and Africa. This frantic struggle for land also caused hostile feelings among the European powers. Many nations knew some form of bloodshed was imminent and formed alliances in preparation.
World War One had many legacies after it ended. A legacy that the war left was power and authority in different countries effect after the war. The powers were the Nazis in Germany, the fascist in Italy,and the Bolsheviks in Russia. After the war many people were looking for hope,which made them join groups to make them feels apart of something.
There were many reasons why America didn’t join World War I. The U. S. felt they did not need to get involved in foreign country conflicts that did not directly affect them. That wasn’t the only reason why the U. S. didn’t feel the need to join the war. Americans were scared that if they joined the war they would slip back into a Gilded Age. Joining the war could potentially mean that the U. S. would be distracted from all the progress they fought so hard for in the Progressive Era.
When World War 1 first initiated in Europe in 1914 with the European nations battling against each other, President Woodrow Wilson declared that the United States would remain neutral. However, after German U-boats began attacking and sinking American and other neutral countries vessels carrying innocent passengers and supplies, President Wilson urged Congress in his address to declare war. Wilson expressed that his decision was not based on revenge or demonstration of strength since “property can be paid for while lives of innocent people cannot be,” but President Wilson wanted to vindicate human rights and bring democracy and peace to the world that was under autocratic authority (Doc. 1). As the end of the second decade of the 20th century came to a close, the European world was in shambles. In the years 1914 to 1918, all of the European countries and some other world powers fought in the treacherous battle that was World War I. The two main forces of the European power were the Triple Alliance, formed of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente, formed of Great Britain, France, and Russia. Before this war started, it was thought by most that it would be a quick war and little would occur across the countries in battle. After the four years of World War I, millions were dead, cities were left in ruin, and all anyone could do was look for someone to blame for all the destruction.

These weapons were state of the art for the early 20th century. These weapons caused casualties to skyrocket as the Allies and the Central Powers were in a stalemate.

World War I is a prime example of the destruction that humanity can cause. The pure sorrow and hopelessness that “The Great War” caused remains one of the darkest moments of human history. This picture is one such moment captured during World War I which showcases how devastating the reality of the war was. Unlike now, soldiers in World War I didn’t have the luxury to be taken to hospitals and receive immediate medical attention when they had injuries. When a soldier was injured, they were treated in the unsanitary conditions of the trenches and endured any lasting pain.
