In the book, Larson also reveals the negative aspects of the fair and how it was damaging to the country in some ways. Above all, the thing that effected people the most at the World’s Fair was the buildings and great architectural work that went on. The lights alone had a huge effect on people. One person recalled, ““As the light was fading in the sky, millions of lights were suddenly flashed on, all at one time... Having seen nothing but kerosene lamps for illumination, this was like getting a sudden vision of Heaven”” (254).
Even while constructing the fair, there were numerous casualties in the labor force. Burnham himself held an authoritarian rule of the laborers of the Fair. He had ordered one of the construction’s managers to “fire any man who did inaccurate or slouchy work or who failed to do more than his full duty” despite knowing those who were dismissed “faced homelessness and poverty; their families confronted the real prospect of starvation” (Larson 145). Burnham’s actions mirror the strict rules that many business leaders during the Gilded Age had enforced onto their workers. The new, postindustrial work ethic that focused on unskilled and repetitive labor made the majority of America’s laborers disenfranchised with their mundane jobs.
The novel starts out by talking about how Chicago wins the bid for the 1893 World’s Exposition. Burnham and his friend/partner are given the opportunity to be the architects for the fair. While building the fair, Burnham faces obstacles, like deaths and injuries while constructing the site.
I didn’t have much knowledge on the evens around that time, but after reading the book I have not only learned about the lives of Daniel Burnham and H.H. Holmes but the historical events that took place which changed the American history. Throughout the book Larson pieces Birmingham’s story carefully and slowly, giving me an understanding of how The World 's Columbian Exposition came to be. "The White City had drawn men and protected them; the Black City now welcomed them back, on the eve of winter, with filth, starvation, and violence"(Larson, 323). This quote gave me a better understanding of Chicago around the time this book took place. The Chicago World’s Fair had created a sense of pride for its citizens.

The people around us and our surroundings shouldn’t change who we are because we all have our own personalities and our own ways of doing things. David Foster Wallace, author of “Ticket to the Fair,” grew up a couple of hours from down state Springfield but moved to the east coast is writing a articles on the Illinois state fair. As he goes through the days of the fair he realizes thing are different from the East Coast, and that the people are not what he expected. The way people treat David makes him act different toward people. “Lacking a real journalist’s killer instinct, I’ve been jostled way to the back, and my view is observed by the towering hair of Ms. Illinois country fair, whose function here is unclear.”
He begins his novel with the events leading up to the writing of the U.S. Constitution and leads into the ratification and the changes that came with this great document in history. In the coming years there would be violations of the Constitution by the coming president and after some small debate the Constitution was cleared of any bumps it had at the time. It was soon after that talk over the Bill of Rights emerged and it was even more shortly after when the Bill of Rights was not a talk, but an actual document which would include the famous Second Amendment. This amendment would go into full affect and it would cause more trouble than Framers probably ever imagined. It would be, then and now, misinterpreted and cause some troubles that some would say cost more than its worth.
The main subject in this novel so far is Joe Rantz. He was one of the nine crews that won gold medal in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. As a child, he was often away from his family because of his step mother, Thula, did not like him because her husband, Joe’s father, Harry, treated Joe better than he would treat Thula. Thula often got upset about Joe that she threatened to leave Harry if he did not find somewhere else Joe can stay. Due to not seeing his family often, he acquired his own skills to survive, such as finding food and building shelter.
The book chosen for this review is Many Masks: The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright by Brendan Gill. This book is an excellent writing on the beginning, middle and end of Frank Lloyd Wright’s life and it gives us a full look at who the man, claimed to be the greatest American Architect of the twentieth century, truly was. The most interesting part about Brendan Gill’s writings is that he knew Frank Lloyd Wright personally. Because of this, he was able to share more insight and set up multiple interviews to gain the information that he shares with us through his book.
This novel talks about the life in America during those times back in 1937 how many people struggled to live. Many people during those days lost their jobs. There was no welfare state or unemployment benefit. Disabled or old people had to depend on their families or charity and keep working for as long as they could. Everyone was so competitive in order to get a job.
