1984 Summary Randi Dean period 5 1984 by George Orwell was labelled one of his “best crafted novels” . he uses the book to portray one of the worst utopias ever. The main character's name is winston smith, he is a low class member of a ranking society in London. In this society the high ranking party watches you through “telescreens” the leader is known as Big Brother. He controls people history and language as well as what they learn and think. The plot of the story is about Big Brother creating a new language called newspeak to prevent rebellion taking words out related to it and making thoughts of it illegal. The book progresses as Winston wants to fight back the oppression . he therefores buys a diary which is illegal to right down his thought crimes. all of a sudden, soldiers barge in to capture them. Mr. Charrington who was the owner of the store they lived in was revealed a member of the “Thought Police”. Winston and Julia were kidnapped took to a place called the “Ministry of Love”, where Winston finds out that O’Brien was really a spy that pretended to be a member of the ‘Brotherhood’ to trap Winston, O’Brien spent months torturing Winston. Then ,O’Brien finally sends him to the final destination for anyone who doesn't like the Party.O’Brien tells Winston that he will be have to confront his worst fears(Winston had recurring nightmares about rats during the whole book) therefore O’Brien straps a cage full of rats on Winston’s head. Winston couldn't take it anymore and begged O’Brien to torture Julia instead. Giving up Julia was O'Brien's whole purpose. Winston's spirit was crushed and he was sent back to the outside world. After released he no longer felt anything for Julia . By the end of the story Winston accepted the Party and loved Big
