“What are we going to do, Harley? Mum’s gone, Sarah’s gone, everyone hates us.” This is a quote from the novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s cove by an Australian author James Moloney. Good literature makes us think about the world. It is about a dysfunctional family; Kerry Matt a selfish person and the mother who had abandoned her children, Carl an insecure boy, Sarah an unfair but scared woman and their little brother Harley a delinquent. They had three fathers but they always abandoned the family. This novel is aimed for a teenager audience who don’t like to read, it use several realist themes such as abandonment, relationships, violence and loneliness. Carl Matt wants nothing more than to be a part of a happy family, something he has never experienced. Thus when Joy Duncan offers Carl a job at the barge, Skip Duncan was happy to have him but his attitude to Carl changes when he hears his name by going from impressed to angry, he screams at him to get off the barge. When Skip gives Carl a chance to work, “Saw what he hasn't thought to find, not in someone named Matt." was that he looked at Carl and agreed with his wife that he was different to the rest of his family and that they weren't all the same as everyone believed. When Joy said she’ll look after Harley, Carl couldn’t remember “A time when someone considered Harley in need of care instead of watching." Because he can't remember the last time anybody really cared about them and really wanted to look after them. When Harley insists that Carl had the first piece of cake that he made he proved that he truly cares about Carl and is very thankful for everything Carl has done for him. When Harley gets lost in the ocean, Carl and Skip goes to rescue him. When Carl finds Harley, he says to Skip "You found him." Skip responds with "Don't forget your part in this, boy.” This quote shows Skip is proud of
