The Rebellious Daughter: Analyzing the Theme of Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds” The story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan explores the deep familial emotions between a mother and her daughter. Jing-Mei’s mother had left China to come to America after losing her family, and had been raising Jing-Mei in America with her second husband. Despite her mother’s grand hopes for Jing-Mei to become successful in America by becoming a child prodigy, Jing-Mei did not share the same opinions.

“Her actions remind me that, even under unbearable circumstances, one can still believe in justice,” in David Henry Hwang’s foreword, in Ji-Li Jiang’s memoir Red Scarf Girl, commemorated even during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution anyone can overcome adversity (9). Ji-Li Jiang was a young teenager at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, and living through a very political time in China’s history made Ji-Li into the person she is today. Ji-Li’s intelligence, her choices, and family devotion made her into the headstrong and successful person she is today. Even when Ji-li thought she was unintelligent, others saw she was wise. There were many moments when Ji-Li was reminded she was very smart.
Unlike the last chapter, where silence was encouraged, this chapter shared that success is achievable for women, specifically Chinese women. Kingston had also felt a deep connection to Fa Mu Lan. This is a significant part of the novel, as it is the fist time the aspect of “The Woman Warrior” was introduced. Kingston tells the story of the woman warrior as if it was her own childhood. Although Kingston has never actually been to China herself, she paints this fantasy of China in her head.
Activity: I don’t favor one girl over the other based on what side they had presented. Since they were assigned the topic, there could be no correlation between whether or not I have a preference between Trinae and Dayna. I listened to both arguments with equal attention. Both girls seemed to present adequate amount of facts and support to back up their chosen stance. Trinae presented the anti-abortion side.
In Maxine Hong Kingston’s 1976 novel The Woman Warrior, Hong Kingston, through several novellas, illustrates key moments and stories from her life, including stories of great female warriors like Fa Mulan, and even her own mother, who overcomes adversity and danger, both literal and metaphorical. Through the vehicle of these autobiographical moments and “talk-stories”, Hong Kingston reveals her views on feminism and her views on individual the role and individual liberty of Women in Chinese culture. As a first-generation Chinese-American, she had a very different perspective on her role as a person than her parents, during a time when second-wave feminism was affecting swathes of American cultural ideals. Hong Kingston’s ideas echo many of the key features of this movement, like independence from men, seeking out your own education, and not needing the approval of a man or family to be successful.
The Woman Warrior is a “memoir of a girlhood among ghosts” in which Maxine Hong Kingston recounts her experiences as a second generation immigrant. She tells the story of her childhood by intertwining Chinese talk-story and personal experience, filling in the gaps in her memory with assumptions. The Woman Warrior dismantles the archetype of the typical mother-daughter relationship by suggesting that diaspora redefines archetypes by combining conflicting societal norms. A mother’s typical role in a mother-daughter relationship is one of guidance and leadership. Parents are responsible for teaching a child right from wrong and good from evil.

Mother knows best. And yet so many daughters in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club feel slighted by what the matriarchal figures in their lives have in mind for them, or rather, what they believe their mothers have in mind for them. A perfect storm of expectation, true and false, about love, about success, about being Chinese. The souring of mother-daughter relationships in The Joy Luck Club stem from unrealistic or ill conceived expectations that both parties hold for the other.
Between the late 1950’s and early 1960’s the “second generation” of abstract expressionists came around. While females of the first generation faced issues of being left out of the narrative and not getting credit or recognition for a movement they helped found, women of the second generation had an entirely new issue.
