A story Enrique 's Journey written by Sonia Nazario is a book about a boy on his Journey to the united states. On Enrique’s Journey, he comes to a point where he has to make a tough decision between staying in the united states and going back to Honduras. Enriques dilemma is that he has just as many reasons to go back to Honduras as he does to stay in the united states. One example of Enrique wanting to stay in the United States seen when Enrique finally sees his mother “ He Jumps squarely onto the bed next to her he gives her a hug then a kiss“ (Nazario 190). Conquistador, written by Buddy Levy about the famous ventures of Hernan Cortes, places the reader in the 16th century, or the era c.1450-c. 1750 ce. During this time, the idea of exploration was spreading quickly, as kingdoms and empires in Europe sought to expand their territory. Portugal, with Spain following after, led the way for exploration as they headed south. Spain, however, ventured west, driven by a patriotic attitude of expanding past their borders. Levy tells the story of Hernan Cortes, originally setting sail from Spain, as he sailed from Cuba to the shores of Mexico in 1519, eager about the discovery of new lands.
In the essay "A Gringo in the Lettuce Fields," Thompson tells us about his errors and reminds us that he is an outsider. I believe the reason for this is because there is so much misconception that immigrants just come to America to take away these jobs from Americans. I also believe that immigrants know that Americans believe this to be true. With that being said, I think his target audience are both Americans and the immigrants doing this type of work. I think there is somewhat of an ignorance when it comes to understanding what this type of work entails and the damage it does to ones body.
In “A Gringo in the Lettuce Fields,” Gabriel Thompson spends about two months cutting lettuce in the hot fields of Yuma alongside immigrants laborers. At first glimpse, the immigrants thought he was either crazy or an undercover immigration agent ready to deport them back to their home country. But within a few days just outside Watsonville, Thompson got to know some immigrants and sensed the backbreaking, harsh conditions work of these immigrant laborers. He would then get physically drained, and never became good enough to keep up with the machine that puts along with the rows of lettuce driving the pace of the crews. Thompson, in the end, shines a bright light on the underside of the economy, exposing injustices endured by low-paid laborers
In the article "In the Strawberry Fields", Eric Schlosser uses an abundance of rhetorical strategies to influence the audience. "In the Strawberry Fields" is honest and gets to the point of the illegal immigrants working. His in depth description of the migratory workforce in California proves how farmers who pick strawberries for a living are the lowest-paid, and hardest working, which makes it an unfavorable job amongst farmers. The author uses eloquent details to get the message across that California has also become one of the most dependent states to have the availability of cheap labor. However, the fact is that most Americans have the impression that Hispanic immigrants are perceived as a threat for not assimilating into the American mainstream, more so into the Anglo-Protestant values. Why is that? Is it for fear that the Spanish Language may overrun the country? Similarly, Neil Foley, author of, Mexicans In The Making of America, asks the same questions, why fear? In his prologue chapter, Foley makes a point by proving the fact that in the past, Mexican immigrants were not a concern but were, “ let in to provide the labor force for the rapidly expanding economy”(2).
The McFarland community is widely made up of poor farmers who pick fields day and night in extreme weather conditions for minimum wage. Further, the runners also help their parents pick crops from a young age while also attending school. Coach White is astonished when he comes to know that they do not pay the farmers “by the hour. [They] get paid by the field.” (McFarland USA).

During the 1930’s thousands of Dust Bowl migrant workers made their way from the central plain into California seeking work. In their search for work and some form of income many of the migrants and their families ended up in Hoovervilles, which were makeshift roadside camps that were greatly impoverished. Steinbeck was able to travel through the labor camps and recorded the horrible living conditions of the migrant workers. The collection of these recordings was published as Harvest Gypsies. During the tours of the labor camps he saw the oppression of the workers first hand in addition to workers being demoralized by wealthy land owners.

For many immigrants the bordering country was seen as an exceptional place that offered great opportunities but at the same time many family difficulties. In the short story “ The Circuit” by Francisco Jimenez, the lifestyle of a migrant worker is portrayed as discouraging. Migrant workers have to move often. After a long day of picking strawberries, Panchito returns home to find that “Everything [he] owned was neatly packed in cardboard boxes.” he “suddenly felt even more the weight of hours, days, weeks, and months of work.” (1) Moving often is discouraging because everything that you have built at your current location is taken away.
John Steinbeck, in the novel, Grapes of Wrath, identifies the hardships and struggle to portray the positive aspects of the human spirit amongst the struggle of the migrant farmers and the devastation of the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck supports his defense by providing the reader with imagery, symbolism and intense biblical allusions. The author’s purpose is to illustrate the migrant farmers in order to fully exploit their positive aspects in the midst of hardships. Steinbeck writes in a passionate tone for an audience that requires further understanding of the situation.
"'Mexican' Is Not A Noun" by Francisco Alarcon, minorities have no agency, which means activities are done to them and they don't have control over what occurs in their lives. Towards the start of the poem, Alarcon says that Mexican is not "a thing or a descriptive word”. In the next stanza, he says that Mexican is “a life, long, low-paying job”. Alarcon utilizes similar sounding word usage by beginning words with "l" to underscore that Mexican's low paying employments are for all 0f life since they can't make tracks in an opposite direction, because of their absence of an agency and general separation in the public eye. At the end of the poem, Alarcon says that Mexican “strikes, burns, just like, a verb”.
