Set in the 1940’s in Bayonne, Louisiana, A Lesson Before Dying is a story that was set in the 1940’s in Louisiana. At this time, the United States was still having its issues with racism. When people read that the story was based in Louisiana, the south, they automatically know that there were many issues with segregation. The protagonist and narrator of the story, Grant Wiggins, is a young, black school teacher who is upset about the way he was raised through segregation and has never gotten over it. Jefferson, another one of the main characters throughout the story, is also a young black man. After being asked if he needed a ride from two other black men, Jefferson takes the offer. Jefferson is a good guy. He is helping out a friend in need and is trying his best, but it gets hard for Wiggins when Jefferson is so nasty and sarcastic about himself. Throughout these chapters, Wiggins does not know if he can help Jefferson if he is not going to take advantage of the good he is trying to do for him. Miss Emma just wants Jefferson to be happy with himself about the life he has had, so she tries to make him the best person he can be by getting the help of Wiggins. As people are visiting Jefferson in jail, he gets more sarcastic with them about the hog deal. He acts like a legitimate hog to some of his visitors, and that just makes him come off as a rude, sarcastic, unappreciative man. All his family and friends that visit him want to do is help him and get to be with him before he is killed. The town community helps put together a charity for Jefferson so that he can have clean clothes and as Wiggins students are singing Christmas Carols, he wonders if the world will ever become a better place. This gives Wiggins motivation to do something better for Jefferson to make his last moments mean something. Jefferson’s execution date has been set and Miss Emma at this point has become sick. She can’t visit Jefferson anymore because she can’t leave the house. This makes Miss Emma upset because now she can’t see if
