In the Q and A: What is American dream by Richard Rodriguez and Sandy Close made me realized the truthfulness of the difference between the American Dream perceptions of immigrants and the native born Americans . To the outsiders or the immigrants, America is the place where one could separate from their past and where one can change their lives. While to native born is different, they believed American Dream does not exist anymore. To them it is not about changing lives but it’s about acquiring more, or at least one can still hold on to what he got. For instance, when one does not make much money or does not own a home, to them the American dream is failing. Artwood described America’s prominent contributions around the world such as in music, dance, literature, films etc. She pointed out that America internationally supports freedom, honesty and justice. She perceived America to be a believer of the principle of protecting the innocent and defenseless. However, Atwood believed that American’s identity has changed when it started to meddle to other countries business, like the war in Iraq. Secondly, when the US territory can be entered without its knowledge or permission or this is the immigration problem. Thirdly, when one can be taken and jailed without cause. Fourthly, the privacy of people is no longer protected when government started to look into one’s mail without their permission. The widespread intimidation, corruption and fraud in the government, the increasing value of debt were also included. I do not agree with Artwood when she said that American identity has changed. I believe that in the past, the global image of America was strong and other countries can be greatly influenced by America on their international policies. Today America is still strong on its political and economic influence to other countries. Although, China and Russia also compete with America in global standing, America is still respected by other countries. In general, America is viewed positively in more parts of the world because the U.S. is a nation that protects
