Nobody talked about it, but by the end of the first day Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys.’ This explains how Salva doesn’t panic and think irrationally about situations like the Itang refugee camp closing, and when he decides to walk to Kenya, he follows through and helps three-fourths of the group arrive in Kenya safely. The Lost Boys of Sudan is a name they gave to a group of refugees who escaped Sudan because of the civil war that was occurring. In order to reach Kakuma in Kenya, they had walked more than a thousand miles. Their trip started in Sudan then they started walking to Ethiopia. However, they had to go back and head to refugee camps in Kenya instead. They had faced several challenges when they were walking.
“ The walking began again, but to where?” The book A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park illustrates the struggles and issues that are affecting the people of Southern Sudan. The story has 2 perspectives, one being a girl named Nya who is part of the Nuer tribe in 2009. The other is the life of a boy named Salva who is DInka. Despite the differences in their background they are both faced with difficult crises.
A Long Walk to Water is a heart wrenching novel by Linda Sue Park written about a well off Dinka eleven-year-old boy named Salva Dut. The novel shares Salva’s traumatic life experiences through the lenses of time (1974-2014) and culture. Salva was brought up into an emerging civil war between the north and south of Sudan, Africa, a desolated place in which water is valued like gold. Throughout the novel, Salva encounters an abundance of character changing challenges and obstacles. The narrator states, “…Salva was slowly weakening…step by step.”
A major theme in the true story, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park is perseverance. Perseverance is to stay steady in what you are doing or in a purpose, especially when you are faced with difficulties. This is a perfect theme for A Long Walk to Water because the main character, Salva Dut, an 11 year old Sudanese boy, faced many difficulties and kept going. He took things ‘bit by bit, one step at a time’, a lesson he learned from his uncle that helped him get through the desert, and he applied it to his life and kept going and believing his family was alive. Even though he almost died many times, he did not give up, and he went back to his home country and helped many people have better lives by building wells and giving them clean drinking water.

A very important theme in the book A Long Walk to Water is perseverance. The first example that perseverance is an important theme is how Nya walks back and forth to a faraway pond 2 times a day, every day, for seven months a year without stopping. Also, on the path, there are thorns everywhere that are painful to remove. Nya only gets a small bit of water and rest even though it is very hot and dry. Even the water that Nya gets with much pain and suffering is muddy and infected with Guinea Worms.

These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.

Throughout the book we are led to believe that Salva’s parents and siblings had passed away but he never lost hope that they were still alive.

Salva an eleven year old had to flee from his village all alone because his village was attacked due to the Second Sudanese War that began in 1983. When Salva was at school and his village was being attacked,he was told not to go home, but into the bush,that's where his whole journey began. Salva had to show confidence, determination,and perseverance in order to survive in a difficult environment.

Nya is a young Nuer girl living in a poor village with no plumbing or running water. Despite the harsh environment of Southern Sudan, Nya is able to survive due to her hard work and her family working together.
