Ellen Foster is a book about a young girl who is living in terrible conditions and her father is sexually abusive, verbally abusive and even hits her. Her mother ends up killing herself by overdosing on medication so Ellen has to find a home. After her mother dies, Ellen experiences abuse from her father, and because of that she is forced to pay the bills, shop, and cook for herself. The writing style is a memoir of Ellen Fosters life, and it’s a great learning book. It shows how greatful I should be, just like in A Long Way Gone. Ellen moves families a lot, from her biological family, to a foster family, to her art teacher, to her grandma. Ellen Foster is a brave young girl that has overcome many things. Ellen knows and is determined that she deserves better than the terrible living conditions under where she is suffering. The determination strengthens Ellens will to overcome the misery as she knows she can’t help herself. Racial identities is also a major theme in this book. Throughout the book, Ellen struggles to find her place between racial problems that have been made in her by society. “Sometimes I even think I was cut out to be colored and I got bleached and sent to the wrong bunch of folks.” (page 85) Movement was also a great theme in Ellen Foster because Ellen's foundation was ruined from the beginning. With her father being an alcoholic and a mother who was in and out of the hospital Ellen was forced to pretty much do everything on her own like shop, do her own things, and even just fend for
