The book A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is a memoir about himself involved in war as a child. War began happening in Ishmael’s hometown in Sierra Leone, which was Mogbwemo, so everyone broke apart and he lost his family, except for his brother. He had to start running away from the war to stay alive, so he went with some of his friends and his brother into different provinces of Sierra Leone. They went from village to village looking for food, shelter and safety. Ishmael was caught many times by the army and he thought he was stuck with them forever, but he escaped many different ways.
A long way gone by Ishmael Beah. The main characters name is Ishmael and he was very lucky in this story. Ishmael and his friends escaped from the RUF, He survived every place that he went to, Ishmael was caught by other people and was able to get away from them, and he was saved and brought to a doctor for help at the end of the story. Through the whole book Ishmael talks about the RUF, which is the revolutionary united front.
At this young of an age, Ishmael had no clue what to think, especially without his family. A quote to support this was, “ We walked fast as if trying to stay in the daytime, afraid that nightfall would turn over the uncertain pages of our lives,” (Beah 88). This evidence displays how frightened Ishmael was ever since the war began. He fought in this part of his lifetime. Ishmael would always keep an eye out for anything, including the vicious rebels.
The RUF go town to town raiding and destroying villages. Stealing food and supplies to fill their needs and they don’t have any sympathy for the people. Even if the people don’t get in their way, they will murder anyone in the villages. Upon first glance, the title of the book “A Long Way Gone” appears to apply to the physical distance Ishmael Beah has travelled from his home town of Mogwembo since the attack on his hometown. Upon further analysis, it more accurately describes the emotional distance he has travelled. From losing his family and friends, fighting in the war, getting involved with drugs, and becoming a human rights activist, Beah faced unimaginable circumstances. Throughout his journey, he lost his innocence, became involved in fighting and drugs, and finally developed into someone who rose above his circumstances to advocate for others in his place. Ishmael Beah went from an innocent child to a violent soldier.
The Story of an Innocent Murderer Imagine your life being turned upside down. One minute, everything is business as usual: you go to work and school and you are surrounded by friends and family. The next minute, everything becomes chaotic and hopeless: you cannot find your family and death surrounds you. Ishmael Beah’s life turned upside down as an innocent child when a war began between the government of Sierra Leona and rebels who wanted to overthrow the government. Beah is captured by the government and is brainwashed using drugs into becoming a ruthless child soldier, focused on avenging the deaths of his family by rebel hands.
Ishmael has a flashback of his life in the war. In his dream he encounters a body wrapped in white bed sheets, and as he unwraps it he realizes it is his own face he is looking at. He then awakens, sweating and on the ground. He says, “I was afraid to fall asleep, but staying awake also brought back painful memories” (Beah 19). Even being in a different country cannot take away the hell that Ishmael has been through.
