“My eyes widened, a smile forming on my face. Even in the middle of the madness there remained that true and natural beauty, and it took my mind away from my current situation as I marveled at this sight” (Beah 59). In the story A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the author tells his story of the war in Sierra Leone. A story of sorrow and sadness, as he started his journey at age 13 and joined the army are 15. Because of Beah’s pliancy, treasuring of wisdom, and perseverance, he overcame the mental, physical and social hardships of his journey.

In Beah’s journey becoming a long way gone from himself and his home. He faced metal hardships of war and destruction. But also the physical and social hardships. But he demonstrates that his pliancy helped him overcome the hardship. At the beginning of the story, Beah talks about his childhood before the war and how he and his brother are close, “Junior taught us how to move our feet to the front and back, and simultaneously did the with our arms, shaking our upper bodies and heads” (Beah 7). In the beginning of the book Beah is realizing what starvation and dehydration. Also what it feels like to walk or run many miles a day just to keep alive. Beah say this, “We were so hungry that it hurt to drink water and we felt cramps in our guts. It was as though something were eating the insides of our stomachs. Our lips became parched and our joints weakened and ached. I began to feel my ribs when I touched my sides” (Beah 30). From this the average human could comprehend that Beah is starving. Also that he has not drunken water for a while. Which would result in his parched lips. Beah is now getting to know what the war is doing to him.
