Response Paper on Nathaniel Hawthorne ¨The Birthmark¨ Much happened in the short story of Nathaniel Hawthorne ¨The Birthmark¨. In the beginning of the story I wondered why the story was about a simple birthmark on someone. Having a wife with a birthmark is a special gift of god given to her. As discussed in class Aylmer was disgusted by Georgiana's birthmark instead of loving every natural flaw she was born with. As the narrator introduces Aylmer as a brilliant scientist and natural philosopher who married beautiful Georgiana but wasn't such a pleasant person toward his wife Georgiana. Georgiana had a hand-shaped birthmark on her left cheek, a blemish that marks her mortal. Her birthmark symbolizes mortality. Her hand-printed birthmark disappears only when she was to blush. Also, as discussed in class woman were jealous of her birthmark criticized and thought it was a mark in which ruined Georgiana beauty. According to the narrator, this is something that makes a living thing flawed, in a nature way of reminding that every living thing eventually dies. One day Aylmer asked Georgiana whether she had thought about removing her birthmark. When she found out her husband was being completely serious about her removing her birthmark, she was in shock. Georgiana thought it was a mark in which appear to represents who she is. As time passed during their marriage Aylmer kept bugging her about removing her birthmark, until she eventually got convinced by him and wanted to get rid of it, as he agreed on doing the experiment himself. Aylmer wants her to do it, and this is making her feel like it’s the only way to save their marriage. Georgiana knew that this experiment can go bad any second.
