In the beginning of A Separate Peace, Gene attempts to be equal to Finny in sports. Then when he realizes that's unattainable he switches to competing for being the valedictorian with himself edging out the competition just barely. Next with the return of Finny, he is convinced by the now crippled former all star athlete of the school to begin training for the upcoming olympics. Lastly Gene turns fully to academics when Finny finally realizes the war is real and there won't be a 1944 olympics. This ties into the main story because of how as his focus changes so does his mood towards himself and others, mostly Finny.
chapters 7-9 Happiness is finally a tone in this book rather than the recurring somber moments throughout chapters 1-6. Chapters 7-9 are different than basically different than all of the past chapters. This is because they have a more fun filled feeling to them. That is until the end of the three chapters.
Finny playfully criticizes Gene 's clothing and is grateful for the lack of cleaning service. Gene replies that it is not a big loss considering the war, and he is Finny 's bed for him. The next day, Brinker will explode, wondering if Gene is ready to recruit, when he sees Finny. He starts making a joke on Gene 's "plane" - to kill Finny and get the room to himself - but Gene interrupts him and tells Finny about Brinker 's proposal to sign up. Finny 's harmless reaction leads Gene to realize that Finny does not want him to leave.

The novel takes place during World War II at a boarding school called Devon in New Hampshire. While on the tree limb, Gene jounced the limb they were standing on and caused Finny to fall off and break his leg. A mock trial occurred and Gene is accused of purposefully jouncing the limb causing Finny to fall and break his leg. During this mock trial, Finny refuses to believe that Gene jounced the limb on purpose and rushes out of the room.
The novel A Separate Peace written by John Knowles exhibits a unique friendship between two teenagers, Phineas and Gene Forrester which takes a turn for the worst to turn into a silent one sided war of jealousy that ends in regret. The film created by Peter Yates is a good attempt at exhibiting the same storyline as the novel, but falls short of the clarity displaying major differences which makes the understanding of the storyline difficult and less enjoyable. Two major points affecting the storyline by setting and plot event include the chapter in which Phineas passes away, along with the part where he is taken to the infirmary which results in major differences in the film. The film and novel both display the same content, but they also share some differences in the setting which make the feelings of one hard to analyze.
In the book, A Separate Peace, both Finny and Gene view the definition of friendship differently in their own special ways. Finny shows a lot of respect for his friend, Gene. Even though sometimes things always need to go his way, he shows deep care for Gene. Throughout the few chapters in the book, Finny shows that he truly loves Gene like a brother and is very caring towards his friendship with Gene. “If Finny hadn’t come up right behind me… if he hadn’t been there… I could’ve fallen on the bank and broken on my back!

The strategy in which the author phrased certain sections of dialogue between Finny and Gene is there to show that Finny cares for Gene despite Gene’s obvious discontent. The friendship is a one-way street, and the author uses diction to represent this unbalance in the relationship, leading to friendship being a key theme throughout the book. They are supposed to be best friends, but Gene envies him and thinks he is trying to make him look bad. After Finny’s accident, Gene struggled with guilt and his life was changed because of it. “I spent as much time as I could alone in our room, trying to empty my mind of every thought, to forget where I was, even who I was. One evening when I was dressing for dinner in this numbed frame of mind, an idea occurred to me, the first with any energy behind it since Finny fell from the tree. I decided to put on his clothes” (Knowles 29).
In Gene's younger days, he is carefree and thinks only of himself. Maturity becomes more prominent when Gene confesses his evil against Finny. By the end of the novel, Gene overcomes the battle of good vs evil within and observes, "... my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there." (A Separate Peace, 110).
Gene always competes with Finny he attempts to be better than Finny at everything, and once Finny dies, the competition dies as well. At Finny’s funeral, Gene states, “I could not escape a feeling that this way my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case” (194). Finny is Gene’s whole life, so when Finny dies, half of Gene dies too, and Gene has to learn to live without Finny. Gene cannot even talk about Finny after his death as he explains, “I never talked about Phineas and neither did anyone else…I could not use past tense” (202). Gene is in denial of his friend’s death.
Guilt is a funny concept, that has a different affects on different people. Guilt can cause some to confess and it releases the burden, but for those who take long to confess, it can turn into a negative reaction that can cripple your emotions. A Separate Peace is set in a boarding school in New England. Gene, a main character, is an incisive introvert whose best friend, Phineas, is a handsome athlete. When an accident occurs over the Summer, that leaves Gene and Finny hurt in some way, what comes next could take a toll on their friendship.
