House Document No. 398. Selected, Arranged and Indexed by Charles C. Tansill http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/artconf.asp “The security of their liberties… against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them …on account of religion, sovereignty, trade, or any other pretense whatever.” These phrases for the paragraph will be useful to my paper because gun control is a liberty but so is life. People argue guns take lives so on the basis of both arguments, they are both against law. US Constitution.
Militia persons were normally expected to provide their own weapons, equipment, or supplies, although they might later be compensated for losses or expenditures. From the nation's founding through the early 1900s, the United States maintained only a minimal army and relied on state militias, directly related to earlier Colonial militias, to supply the majority of its troops. By the mid 1600s every town had at least one militia company with a captain. In response to conflicts with Pequot Indians [the colonists encroaching on Indian lands and sacred sites], the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ordered the colony’s scattered militia companies be organized into North, South, and East regiments with a goal of increasing the militia’s
In addition, “militia…” in the eighteenth century was defined as every free able bodied white male citizen at the age of eighteen to forty-five years old (Roleff 68). “A well regulated militia” is stated as the first clause to ensure that citizens will never have their firearms taken away to protect themselves. As a result, the clause created a deterrence against tyranny by the government, which in return provided citizens
Updating the Amendment 2.0 The right to bear arms has been a favoured constitutional law since its establishment in 1791, but as more gun related violence and accidents occur, there has been increasing debate on whether or not guns should be banned in the US altogether, and if not, what regulations should be required for the purchase and handling of them. While guns should not be completely banned from the country, the rules and regulations of gun laws should be tightened. In the 2nd amendment, it clearly states that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” While this statement still holds true, the evolution of firearms and how they have become more dangerous throughout the years is a clear sign of why the laws should be changed.
The Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights is the right to bear arms, which gives American citizens a constitutional right to own and purchase guns. It states, "A well-regulated
Gun Control: an Argument Dating Back to Before 1776 The debate of gun control dates back 100s of years, and many people want to ban guns so that no one can have them. That statement is complete ignorance to what really goes on. The debate has many different viewpoints with some being as radical as banning guns to create a false sense of Utopia. The recent rise of school shootings has set off a spark of gun control debates that make little sense.
The question on whether the 2nd Amendment in the U.S. should be changed or not has become a widely discussed and argued topic as of recent, due to recurring incidents of shootings occurring on U.S. soil by its own inhabitants. While many would be in support of the right to bear arms, including myself, I do believe that the current gun laws need to be made more restrictive than they are in their current state, for the sake of the country and the safety of its people. I’m well aware that I am not a U.S. citizen and that I have no say in what decisions are made there regarding the country’s constitution, but I feel that what I have to say is shared by many of America’s people and that it’s not only Americans that are affected by guns but also those who are visiting the country from abroad. There are many problems regarding America’s very unrestrictive gun laws at present, whether it’s the fact that there is no federal minimum age for possession of a long gun, or the fact that individuals don’t
The directions gun control may take not only affect our nation and society but the future. Guns play a role in everyone’s lives to some degree, whether it be your own personal possession for hunting or home protection. Many consider a militia to be "necessary to the security of a free state" ("The Constitution of the United States," Amendment 2). Americans value the rights that freedom granted by the forefathers, which includes the
Gun control is one of the most controversial topics today. Many believe that owning a firearm is a form of self-defense, while others say an armed civilian is highly unlikely to stop a dangerous situation from escalating. By controlling who can obtain a gun, acts of violence could be greatly reduced. This gun violence prevention ad was created by the group, Moms Demand Action, as a result of the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary shooting that took place in 2012. The group was started by a stay-at-home mom named Shannon Watts.
Debates about the Second Amendment have focused on its parameter to protect private rights of individual people to possess firearms, and the ability to be apart of militia organizations. The world has seen a drastic change since the implementation of the amendment in 1791. Civilian ran militias are almost obsolete, and most militias are now ran and regulated by state governments. The military of the United states has also seen a dramatic increase, and is undoubtedly more powerful. For the most part, civilians are no longer expected or desire to be apart of a militia, however firearms are still essential for self defence, hunting, and
The right to bear arms has been a controversial issue ever since James Madison established it as the second amendment of the constitution. The second amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (US Const. amend. II). Those in favor of the second amendment, believe that arms are used for protection, dangerous situations, and sports.
On December 15, 1791, the Second Amendment was ratified in the United States Constitution. The second amendment states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Martinell 1). In today’s society, there is an everlasting debate over gun control laws and the Second Amendment. Gun control laws are described as the legal measures to license, control, or restrict the ownership of firearms by members of the public.
The founding fathers never could have imagined or possibly even thought there would be so much open opposition to such a basic and fundamental right. They did not add in a P.S. or some fine print specifying that certain activities or weapons are not allowed. So, what do the gun control proponents think the founding fathers meant by the second
A weapon in the wrongs hands is the maximum danger humanity can face. Nowadays, violence and delinquency in society are viewed as the maximum problem solver. Humanity is full of chaos; hate and envy seize our souls. Guns are the ultimate security for some citizens but for others, these add to a feeling of defenselessness. Throughout history, any topic related to guns means a plethora of problems.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
