In the passage “The Word Police” by Michiko Kakutani, there is great tone emphasized throughout the article. However, in the fifth paragraph of the article, Kakutani has some certainly strong, overwhelming tone. Kakutani first establishes their opinion with an appeal that there is an impulse to find political correctness, saying that “Certainly no decent person can quarrel with the underlying impulse behind political correctness…”. This general assumption implies that every decent person knows that there is some urge to be politically correct and that anyone who does not know this, is not a decent person. Kakutani then goes on to use pathos to say that these opinions can either make or break someone.
When people talk about mascots being named after Indian cultures they think that the Indians being recognized should feel honored. However, when that team plays their rival the other fans are taught to hate those people causing them to hear hateful and degrading comments throughout their lives. “If it’s the team’s tradition, then it’s a legacy of bigotry.” (Wulf). Why, They Already Are” written for Sports Illustrated in 2014, Seth Davis effectively argues why Taylor Branch’s claim is incorrect. Davis’ use of ethos addresses Branch’s credibility. Through his use of logos, Davis effectively points out why Branch’s argument is illogical.

Mascots are entertaining animals or historical figures to represent a sports team or a school. However, what is considered fun to others may be harmful to many more. Most Native American tribes do not like schools and teams to use their name as a mascot. There have been many discussions lately whether to ban the use of the names relating to American Indians. Sports team’s mascots have been known to have the most stereotypical features. These mascots are offensive towards Native Americans, because mascots have feathers, headdresses, and even braids and mohawks. Mascots in the past have made it look as if them and their teams have no respect or common decency for Native Americans. Using the N word is offensive and it racist for Africans and Americans and others, people can take stuff in a different way some might not get offended at the word but others might for example Bradley thinks that using the N word is racist and offensive and that is teaching students bad things “But ‘Nigger’ has to do with same. Nigger has to do with calling somebody something. ‘Nigger’ was what made slavery possible ” evidence. Bradley thinks that using the word nigger is wrong and it also teaches something bad future generations.

The main sports teams being targeted due to controversial mascots are programs having names that deal with Native Americans. Well known programs, such as, the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and the Washington Redskins are just a few of the many teams being targeted due to controversial team names and/or mascots. Currently, the Redskins are receiving the most heat from racial groups. However, professional sport teams are not the only teams receiving negative remarks; there are well known colleges that are also receiving huge blows for racial symbols.
The United States of America is a land of freedom, a land of equality, and opportunity. We value independence and should look to exercise this in every form, as a nation. We must stay united and show respect to one another. This means we should not disregard ones ' ethnicity and culture, and use names in which are offensive towards their culture, in order to promote any sort of activity. This is aimed mainly at sports teams that carry racially inappropriate names.
