During the Armenian genocide, which began in Turkey in 1915, the Ottoman government systematically murdered 1.5 million Armenians. In the historical novel, Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian, the story of how young Vahan Kenderian survived the Armenian genocide is told. Twelve-year-old Vahan is forced to grow up at an alarming rate. He experiences tremendous loss and grief in a short span of time. Despite all of his troubles, Vahan is able to resist succumbing to his fears and never loses the hope that one day he will be safe again.
Chapter One: I think it is interesting that Elie is so devoted to his religion, Judaism, at such a young age. As the chapter begins, Elie is 12 years old and already seeking experiences that are usually reserved for individuals over 30 years old. For example, he wants to find a master, someone to learn from, and he wishes to study mysticism.
Strength is essential in enduring a crisis. For most, true crisis is rare, but for a boy by the name of Vahan Kenderian, crisis has struck and it not will leave. Forgotten Fire, written by Adam Bagdasarian is a story about an adolescent Armenian boy who has everything taken away from him by the Armenian genocide. His family, wealth, and influence evaporates around him as the genocide progresses. He is alone and must fend for himself among people who hate his kind.
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is about a fireman named Guy Montag. In the story firemen burn books, and after one job, Montag starts to realize what he is doing is wrong. When he is caught with a book he is hunted down by his boss, coworkers, and the police and ends up setting with a group of book enthusiasts. Montag’s understanding of fire changes from fire being the destroyer of books and evil to fire being the destroyer of books and knowledge.
In Edwidge Danticat's short story, A Wall of Fire Rising, living a happy life for Guy, Little Guy and Lili seems almost impossible. In Haiti, this family lives in great poverty and struggles to makes ends meet. Throughout the story Danticat focuses on Guys character and proves he is unsatisfied with the life he is living, and the situation he put his family in. With the use of textual evidence, it can be argued that Guy's death in A Wall of Fire Rising was intentional because he wanted to escape out of misery and into freedom. Guy expresses a sense of unhappiness with his life multiple times throughout the story.
Little Fires Everywhere In the book Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, she informs of the setting being situated in a city called Shaker Heights, Ohio, in the 1990’s. This book starts off showing one of the main conflicts, the house burning down, and there are many other conflicts throughout the book. Some of the conflicts are small and others are big, but the main one is the conflict between the Richardsons and the Warrens. That leads to the situation in this book and how these two families get to know each other throughout this book.
Having a different sexuality than the one expected of you, doesn’t change who you are as a person. Yes it might change how people see, or treat you, but it should never cause you to hate you uniqueness. You are who you are and nothing should ever come between you happiness even if others can’t accept it for what it is. In “Drowning in Fire” by Craig Womack, the author talks about homosexuality with the help of his central main characters that happens to be Native American.

Krak!” that provides a life lesson by showing dedication, knowledge and love within a small family. The short story is about a Haitian family who doesn’t have much, but they make do with what they do have. There were three main characters in this story.
What causes people to care for those in need? From people that are close and hold strong family bonds to an unemployed war veteran living on the street, something is exhibited from within someone to help those in need. That something is the key to establishing interpersonal relationships, a positive atmosphere, and a happier society. That something is selflessness. A great example of the impact selflessness has is the book Forgotten Fire, written by Adam Bagdasarian, which described the story of a boy trying to survive in the Armenian Holocaust, where he meets many people along the way that help him.
In preparation for this paper I chose to read Fire in the ashes: twenty five years among the poorest children in America by Jonathan Kozol. In this book Kozol has followed these children and their family’s lives for the past twenty five years. In his writing Kozol portrays a point of view most from his background and standing would not be capable of having. He portrays what life is like for those who have been let down by the system that was meant to protect them. Kozols writing style can be very blunt at times, not for shock value, but for the sake of portraying these children’s realities, and not sugarcoating the inequalities that they are faced with.
The novel, Fahrenheit 451, presents a future society where books are prohibited and the firemen burn any that are. The title is the temperature at which books burn. It was written by Ray Bradbury and first published in October 1953. In this novel, protagonist Montag changes his understanding in various aspects such as love or his human relationship throughout the book. However, among all of these, fire – the main theme of this novel – has the most significance as it also changes his understanding of knowledge from books.
In “With the Fire on High” by Elizabeth Acevedo, Emoni is a strong, resilient teen mother with a passion for and excellent talent for cooking. Acevedo divides Emonis's story into three different parts: The Sour, The Savory, and The Bittersweet. Each began with a recipe accompanied by a popular idiom that Emoni had made her own based on what was going on in her life in that section of the story. The first section of the story is labeled “The Sour”, reflecting on the not-so-good things going on in the life of Emoni. The original idiom used at the beginning of this portion is “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
The theme of appearance vs. reality is not limited to people but extends to places , too. For instance , The 2nd Quarter Quill's arena which has been described as" the most breathtaking place imaginable. The golden Cornucopia sits in the middle of a green meadow with patches of gorgeous flowers. The sky is azure blue with puffy white clouds. Bright songbirds flutter overhead.
The story “A Wall of Fire Rising” written by Edwidge Danticat has many similarities to the short story “Volar” written by Judith Ortiz Cofer. In “A Wall of Fire Rising” a poor Hattian family struggles to make ends meet on a daily basis. The father who is named Guy dreams of flying away in a hot air balloon to a better place where he can provide more for his family. Guy wants a better life, and his only escape of reality is through his son’s line recital for a play. Feeling hopeless, Guy makes an ultimate choice to escape reality by committing suicide by jumping off a hot air balloon in midair.
All things are capable of change in our world, and the symbolism of fire in Lord of the Flies is no different. In the book a group of boys land on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. They try to build a society built on the ideas of the adult society they came from. At first the boys seemed to be structured and ordered, but soon their primal instincts of savagery came out changing their system into a horrifying nightmare. Throughout Lord of the Flies, the strength and purpose of the fire created by the boys seems to be a meter of the boys connection to civilization, where towards the beginning it is strong and valiant, and then slowly loses its importance and burns out and finally it encircles the whole island due to its savage purposes
