Director, writer, and producer, Gabriella Cowperthwaite, in her documentary, Blackfish, describes the shameless hunting and treatment of killer whales. Cowperthwaite’s purpose is to persuade us into opening our eyes to the reality of what we are doing to killer whales by confining them in captivity. She invents an emotionally wrenching tone in order to transmit to the adult viewers that living in captivity may not be acceptable life for the whales. The film effectively showed that the whales should not be kept in captivity by giving the audience examples of their signs of aggression and displays of emotion. Cowperthwaite begins her documentary by showing how killer whales can become barbaric when held captive.
Marine parks in the country like SeaWorld, have orcas in tanks that they live in captivity. They use most of the killer whales for their performances in the pool. We all know that orcas are social, and intelligent creatures, that live in the oceans of the earth. We also know that many scientist are trying to study these animals in captivity where they are in tankes. I think Killer Whales should not be in captivity because, of the injures they can get in their tanks, how they get stressed out and they are better in the wild.
In conclusion Blackfish is gives audiences a shocking, aggressive and deeply compelling look into cruel practices of marine parks for decades that will change the way you look at captive/trained killer whales and other animals. In watching this documentary has significantly opened my eyes regarding the brutal treatment and methods of capturing wild animals giving me a greater sympathy for orcas in parks such as SeaWorld. Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
This film about these extremely diverse mammals shows true footage of the whales and what they are capable of in captivity. It also talks about a lot of wrongs that are done to the whales in captivity by people who were there and done it or witnessed it themselves. The film gives out a lot of good information and statistics that have been proven by others as well. The average person believes that orcas, also known as killer whales, are in captivity for their own well being, or to research their species, but that is false. Killer whales are tortured to do our bidding, for other people's entertainment and greediness. The orca trainers limit their food rations so that they become hungry enough to want the “food treat” after they do the tricks that are force upon them. Orcas do not belong in captivity, they belong in the ocean not in a tank.
SeaWorld has been in the spotlight for several years now. Whether it is negative or positive publicity, someone is talking about SeaWorld; from the new animal births at their facility, killer whales attacking their trainer and the sudden unexplainable deaths of many of their animals. In 2013 the documentary “Blackfish” explained how SeaWorld’s animals and staff are really treated. Since the release of Blackfish, SeaWorld’s image and attendance has gone down the drain. SeaWorld San Diego’s attendance is down 12% and SeaWorld Orlando is down 8% (Weisberg, 2015).

I, myself, have been to SeaWorld and have seen the way the animals are treated, with love and respect. Although it is terrible to see such beautiful animals out of their natural habitat, SeaWorld are unable to return them to their homes, as for many animals in the SeaWorld parks, it is their home. Many animals in captivity, such as the infamous Tilikum and Katina, are now too old to be returned to the sea, and frankly, too big. Many of these whales were in fact captured by fishermen many years ago, and have lived in a tank since, but to remove them from the environment at this stage in their life is unfair and would cause great trauma to
This is exactly how animals held captive in zoos and sea-parks feel. Zoos generally hold a variety of animals for public display, also known as “zoological parks.” On the other hand, sea-parks, hold fish and amphibians. These parks that exhibit animals are inhumane and barbaric. Vulnerable creatures are being abused daily and few seem to care about this issue.
Are zoos good or bad? Most people think that they are good… but they just do not know about the other side of zoos. Female african elephants live 17 years in zoos but when they are in the wild they live 56 years. Zoos are unethical and should let all there animals out because they are bad for humans, hurt and separate animals, and Unhealthy for animals.
In 1874, the first zoo opened; however, since then there has been a lot of controversy around zoos. With over 10,000 zoos worldwide, the biggest issue people are seeing is that zoos are capturing innocent animals and putting them in small areas. In reverse, others believe that zoos are great for educational purposes. Zoos are extremely miserable for animals and they should be banned. Zoos are highly unsafe for animals.
