Seventh Grade by Gary Soto is a story based on the first day of school at a middle school where the main character is a boy named Victor Rodriguez witch was in Seventh grade. In the story Charles wrote in 1948 a little girl named Laurie is always getting in trouble, Thus She makes up a fake name for herself to keep her parents from knowing it. In the story Seventh Grade by Gary Soto the narrator develops the setting by giving details about how the school is like the emotions that people go through.
The book Schooled, by Gordan Korman is about a hippie named Capricorn Anderson, or “Cap” who gets thrown into a situation where he is out of his element and that he is not prepared to handle. Cap goes through middle school with no clue on what to do. Cap lived on a secluded farm with only his grandmother because Cap’s parents had died in the Peace Corp in New Guinea. One day, his grandmother fell out of a plum tree where she was picking plums, and broke her hip and had to be in rehab for eight weeks.
Many topics concerning education and its institutions are discussed in Amanda Ripley’s book “The Smartest Kids in The World: and how they got that way,” however, one of the most interesting can be found in chapter five “An American in Utopia.” The introduction of Kim, an American exchange student studying at a high school in Pietarsarri, Finland opens the chapter. Using Kim’s experiences in the Finish school system, Ripley continues to make a comparison between the students' in Finland and the United States. This segment highlights Finish teachers and students viewing education as a legitimate pursuit, while the American students more often than now saw it as a forced activity.
The author’s purpose is to wake up the policymakers of the educational system in order to raise the standard of the quality of education each child receives regardless of income. Ravitch writes to an audience that are invested in the construction of the educational system and the parents along with other interested readers. Against School by John Gatto is an essay that attempts to persuade the reader that public education fails to educate its students. The main way Gatto tries to persuade his audience is by presenting anecdotal evidence and by showing the historical narrative to the education system of the Untied States. Gatto attempts also attempts to reach out to his audience by referring to commonalities in the public education system that have been experienced by many people. Overall the essay is persuasive but lacks any practical authority. The first thing the author does is provide background, background on himself and the situation with education in the United States; and, this is what the author primarily does.
In the article “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto has many characters that change for example one is Victor he changes in three ways one is his positive and negative thinking, secondly by studying, and lastly his crush on his Teresa. To begin with, Victor changes his characteristics throughout the story for example he thinks negative at the beginning of the story and positive at the end of the story. In the text it states “He was going to like seventh grade” and at the begin of the text he says “he wished he could start his life over.” This shows that throughout the story Victor changes by think more positive than negative because at the begin of the text he says he wish he could start over, but towards the end he show positive
What is school really trying to do with our lives? The article “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto is an article that talks about the problem of schools and how the goals are not what they say they are. First. the author talks about how the school system creates boredom and what could be done to fix it. He then talks about how school is not needed in its required class times, what the schools say the goals are for the students, and where our school system originated from.
The students were stuck in “segregated public schools that were not equal”, less environments than the white schools (Warren 21). The student's facilities were worse, were treated as worse than whites, and they could not get the proper education they deserved. They were trapped in this endless cycle of sub-par education. Due to these facts, the students suffered a “detrimental effect. A sense of inferiority” that “affecting a child's motivation to learn” (Warren 19).
In the short story, “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, Victor is a seventh grade boy who is a big daydreamer, shy, and somewhat ignorant. For example in the story Victor tries to impress his crush, Teresa, in French class and attempts to respond to the teacher’s statement in French, “La me vave me con le grandma,” his teacher asks him to speak up and he mumbles, “Frenchie oh wee wee gee in September.” Embarrassed, Victor stays silent for the rest of the period. This shows that Victor was more focused on impressing Teresa than the class itself which led to this event. He was unprepared, raised his hand and realized he didn’t understand French at all
The idea of classroom causing problems for America’s society is elaborated when President Johnson explains that many children in America don’t have enough money to afford school. “There your children’s lives will be shaped. Our society will not be great until every young mind is set free to scan the farthest reaches of thought and imagination.” In order for a society to be great, education is the foundation; schools are where child learn about their world, and what it is they will do in the future to earn money to live a good life. And to better prove his idea Johnson states, “Each year more than 100,000 high school graduates, with proved ability, do not enter college because they cannot afford it,” then questions what will happen in years when time has become elapsed to conclude any efforts are needed to come into play for there to be a Great Society.

In the “Against Schools” article, author John Gatto describes the modern day schooling system and its flaws. He uses several rhetorical strategies in trying to prove his point. He successfully uses all three types of rhetoric in writing this article, which includes ethos, pathos, and logos. He establishes these strategies very early, and often throughout the article. He believes one issues with today’s schooling system is boredom, and that there is a distinct difference between what it means to be educated and schooled.
Going to college for many students is just a normal part of life. It is what will enable them to get an education that eventually will lead to get a well-paid job and the resources and the status to live a comfortable life. But for college professor, Andrew Delbanco, the American college has a higher purpose. In the article “College at Risk”, Delbanco states that colleges should be promoting critical thinking among students, through knowledge of the past and the interaction with each other; as well as, help them discover their talents and passions and figure out what they want to do in life. This type of education is called liberal arts and for Delbanco, it represents the ideal education.
Unsatisfactory schools do not maintain suitable conditions for students to learn and they are not treated as well as students from other schools. An example of this is in Kozol’s Fremont High School when it states that, “Long lines of girls are ‘waiting to use the bathrooms,’ which are generally ‘unclean’ and ‘lack basic supplies,’ including toilet paper” (Kozol 707). Student who have the desire to go to college hit dead ends in the school. One of the most impactful parts of the passage was when Kozol quoted Fortino saying, “You’re ghetto, so we send you to the factory” (Kozol 710). This shows the distrust that students in low-income areas feel toward our education system.
