In Chapter 9 of Behind the Scenes, Elizabeth Keckley describes two very different reactions to liberty she witnessed while working among freed slaves. Some freedmen and freedwomen were miserable in the North, and even wished to return to their southern homes and their old lives. Uninformed Argument of Gaming New York Times magazine critic Sam Anderson in his online article “Just One More Game” discusses the recent topic of gaming and its impact in our society. Anderson outlines the history of games and how they have evolved into meaningless distractions which he refers to as “stupid games” (Anderson par.3). He claims there is no point or value in gaming, but he does not explain or show evidence to the negative side of gaming. Due to Anderson’s lack of logical reasoning his argument is unconvincing and ineffective.
A book about teenage brainiacs isn’t complete without a chapter dedicated to the SAT. As author Alexandra Robbins explained the history and composition of the test, she also shared with readers different types of learning methods students use to absorb what they are taught in the classroom. Two of these methods included the surface achieving method and the deep approach. The first focuses on the memorization of facts while the latter pertains to truly understanding the subject. “The study found that the higher-scoring students were those who used the surface and achieving approaches, while the lower-scoring students were more likely to use the deep approach, their love of learning unrewarded by the SAT” (Robbins 291).
Don’t Forget Gaming: A Summary of Steven Johnson Let’s face the facts, video games have been viewed primarily as a waste of time; however, Steven Johnson, a well-known author, expresses the actual benefits gained from playing video games in his short narrative “Why Games Are Good for You”. I know a different world where the outcomes are weighted in the favor of the player, the person or people in control. In the gaming discourse community, there are skills that I have learned that can be useful in day-to-day academic activities, and in classes. In the gaming community the skills adaptability, tenacity, and analyzing strengths and weakness will help me in the academic community by allowing me guidance in college.
The TED talk I have watched and will review is “Elyn Saks: A tale of mental illness — from the inside.” Elyn Saks introduces herself to the audience saying she has chronic schizophrenia. When she was younger, she has spent a lot of time in hospitals. She said that she could have ended up being hospitalized for the rest of her life. Luckily, she hasn’t been there for almost thirty years, but she has not been clear of all psychiatric symptoms.

When Matthew Walther published his article “Sorry Nerds: Video Games Are Not a Sport” he tries to explain in a variety of different ways how video games aren’t a true sport; yet proceeds to use the reference that watching CNN with your grandpa could be a sport biased on his definition of a sport. With the way the author is trying to describe how he doesn’t think video games are a sport to his audience he leaves out some key things. This proves, that kids are gaining new knowledge from these games. They also improve hand-eye coordination, and raises players’ self-esteem. The article (Wiley 2016) Science Daily states, “Gaming use was associated with better function in brain circuits critical for learning based on the acquisition of new skills through practice.”
Over the years there has been a big controversy over whether video games are relatively good or extremely bad for children. Video games are super beneficial to a kid’s learning process and have been proven to increase social skills, productivity, and stress. The fear that video games are harmful to a child, is proven through countless experiments that they are actually great for their growth and brain capacity. Video games can increase the social skills in a child, Xbox and PlayStation provide great opportunities for cooperation and competition. Two different studies, one by Katherine Keyes and the other by Vinay Devnath, both have proved that the use of video games can increase the social skills that many children can’t grasp, “Video game playing is often a collaborative leisure time activity for school-aged children, and these results indicate that children who frequently play video games may be socially cohesive with peers and integrated into the school”( Keyes, PhD).

These types of games have become an extremely popular activity and are a big part of a lot of people’s everyday lives. Instead of looking at video games as a leisurely hobby that one plays in their spare time, it is now looked as a positive benefit for people to play. Playing video games are beneficial, according to some studies they can develop cognitive skills, create social connections, and stimulate creativity.
