The essay by kozol shows the harsh reality about the uneven funds and attention given to the schools were many poor and minority students attend. During a visit to Fremont high school in 2003, Kozol claims that school that are in poverty stricken areas appear to worse than school that are in high class neighborhoods. Throughout the essay, kozol correlates between the south central Los Angeles high school and the wealthy high schools that are in the same district. When he learned the graduation requirement at Fremont and the classes the school had offer to accomplish this requirements, Kozol was amazed at how academically pointless the graduation requirements at Fremont and the classes to accomplish them were. Segregation of Mexican Americans from the dominant Anglo race has been around for many years. Since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexican Americans have been treated like a second-class race facing racism and segregation. As a result, segregation in the education system affected Mexican American children. An increasing number of Mexican Americans across California led to an increase of Mexican children enrolling in schools. Author David James Gonzales (2017), explores the degrading school facilities Mexican students were assigned to.
Now, that it is 2017, The United States of America does not deny education to anyone. Including those who are undocumented such as myself. I can’t compare to those life threating dangers that they face but to this day I still fear deportation. I was brought to The United States when I was two-years old and since then I have not been back to my home country. I grew up here, I learned the culture, the language, and I was also blessed to be able to get an education here.

This woman was a project director for the Pew-sponsored National Forum on college level learning from 2002-2004. In the book Chicano Students and the Courts, the author Richard R. Valencia provides a very detailed overlook of the education litigation that the Mexican American students and community went through for education. They fought for education equality and desegregation in schools throughout the country from K-12 and in higher education facilities. The separation of Mexican Americans from their white colleagues around 1848; this started the mistreatment and discrimination of students of Mexican decent. On the other hand, her argument against the school’s truancy fines is weak because these fines prevent kids to become part of criminal gangs. However, her essay is effective because she demonstrates to the reader the problems that the U.S. is facing to deal with criminals and poor population.

This is what was happening in Arizona. The Governor removed the class’s humanity because they were teaching controversial information in the class. They were trying to save their class by peaceful protests, but the oppressors or government was making their protests seem comparable a revolt against the US Government. This class was growing graduation rates of Mexican-Americans in Tuscan High School, everyone that took the classes graduated and then 85 percent of those who graduated attend college making the class a success. The only way for the oppressed to overcome the oppressors is to not become a subject or object but to join together to end the oppression.

Looking at this article through a counselor lens, I believe it is our duties to advocate for all students no matter their SES or ethnic background. There is clearly more work in advocating for students in working class school, but there are students that still needs our help in the upper class school.

Rankine is able to pull together the underlying implications of affirmative action on page 13 (Section 1) where the narrator is describing an interaction between (presumably) two women who attended the same college. The other woman (who is white) states that “she, her father, her grandfather, and you, all attended the same college”, here we as readers are given an immediate understanding of the reason for this conversation (Rankine 13). The white woman set a trap, disguising the lunch meeting as a friendly conversation whose form and perspective immediately change with the introduction of college admissions into the conversation. The narrator then goes on to explain that “She wanted her son to go there as well, but because of affirmative action or minority something–she is not sure what they are calling it these days … her son wasn’t accepted” (Rankine 13).
Affirmative action has become obsolete in today’s society. Affirmative action is an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women; also: a similar effort to promote the rights or progress of other disadvantaged persons (Merriam-Webster, 2011). Today’s affirmative action will demoralize the very concepts that the policy was implemented to uphold: those of equality for all people regardless of color and discrimination. This policy supports racial multiplicity at the price of distinction, impartiality and experience; it also follows the line of reverse discrimination and sexual bias against white men (Reyna, Tucker, Korfmacher, & Henry, 2005).

Yet, we the people of the United States failed to realize another component in order to form a perfect union. Which is to establish and promote equal opportunities for a quality education for all. However, we live in a society where social locators such as class, gender, and race are huge factors in the determination of one’s educational future.
