Losing someone is hard, especially when it happens abruptly without warning. It leaves unsettling feelings along with the hardship behind. The correlation of loss and grieving is seen in “All Eyez On U” by Nikki Giovanni. Giovanni explains how 2Pac’s death made her and others feel. This is done through the use of stylistic elements such as a section of detail, imagery, and syntax. With this Giovanni reveals underlying anger along with grief over 2Pac’s death.
Beginning in the first line of the passage, Giovani selects repetition in detail by using “unable” multiple times in one verse (Giovanni 1). The syntax is seen mostly through the many anaphoras spilled out over the poem. A few of them are “not go away”, “it is not right”, and “I saw” ( 25,36, 50). Even though these are all sprawled out and are used in different ways, they all have the same context of coming from a place of rage. Giovanni uses them over and over again at the beginning of lines to exaggerate. Exaggerate the underlying rage that is built up as though she is trying to break walls with them to get people to understand what happened to 2Pac. Yet, this is not the only way of exaggeration used in the poem. Asyndeton is deliberately displayed in every line of the poem leaving there to be on conjunctions or abbreviation. This again adds to the impact of her angry Giovanni is portraying throughout her piece. This since the absence of conjunctions and abbreviations is creating ideas to flow into each other. An example of this can be seen when Giovanni talks about Sonia Sanchez learning about 2Pac’s death. In this portion of the poem, the anaphora, it creates Sanchez’s little story into a stream of consciousness saying “When she learned of his passing she walked all day walking the beautiful warrior home to our ancestors i just cried” (56/57). In this line, one can see the ideas flowing into each other, creating the effect of a stream of consciousness and also the anaphora showing more emotion of grief and rage.
