Comparison between Revisiting Sacred Ground and All My Relations
Linda Hogan and N. Scott Momaday both take their writing inspiration from their knowledge of Native American religion and the unique tribal cultures that is in their heritage. Momaday’s heritage is the Kiowa culture which is often mentioned in and plays a large role in his writings as well as how he views the world. Hogan very rarely speaks of her heritage in her writings, however she is of Chickasaw decent so it can be assumed that her writing is derived from her experiences with that particular Native American culture.

He like Hogan is speaking about how all life is interconnected, however it is not a ceremony it is the realization that a single spot can hold great answers to the impervious questions that so many people have. For Momaday this was a spiritual journey that he took in order to revisit his heritage and the meaning that it has to him. This journey has a parallel with the Islam faith’s requirement that everyone must take a pilgrimage to Mecca at some point in their lifetimes. He and a friend took a journey to the Medicine Wheel and only by taking the wrong fork in the road they meet a man named Jurg from Switzerland. All three people view the Medicine Wheel with Momaday stating that “What we know without doubt is that it is a sacred expression, and expression of man’s relation to the cosmos.” As they left they stopped and had a ceremonial tea with Jurg with Momaday stating that “The three of us had become friends. Hogan in her essay appears to have lost the meaning of that and thus must have the ceremony performed in order to restore that lost connection to the sacred knowledge. It is hard to conceive of everything being related and to bridge the realm between reality and spiritual it is often needed that a spiritual guide is present. The man in her story fills this role as he is the one that serves to perform the ceremony that allows her to restore her connection to the spiritual and that all life on this planet is
