The group of nineteen year olds started the war with a great sense of nationalism and enthusiasm, but after experiencing ten weeks of hard training from Corporal Himmelstoss and the brutality of life on the front. Paul and his friends realize that the reasons of for which they enlisted are simply meaningless after some time on the front. Also, Paul and his friend realize that war is not as glorious or honorable as it is made out to be, and constantly lived in strain both mental and physical.

It has the action of war, the happiness of friendship, and the sorrowness of loss and given up hope. It varies from other books i have read about war and loss because it gives a perspective that I have never seen through before. The book is based on the lives of German soldiers in World War I, rather than the usual book through the eyes of an American soldier.

In the result of joining the war, Paul Baumer visits his childhood friend, Franz Kemmerich with an amputated leg. When Franz dies that night Paul realizes that war can take anyone’s life. The book is widely controversial and was burned by the Nazi party in 1933 in front of the University of Berlin because of its anti-war message and negative portal of Germany. This was the first book to be publicly published. In reality, All Quiet On The Western Front was not an anti-war or anti-military novel; it was only showing the truth of what war was really like.

The only things I had known was that the United States of America had a strong army and they would protect us. In chapter two of the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Remarque, Paul realizes the threat and destruction of war towards the young soldiers. Paul thought about his dreams prior to fighting in the war and realizes that his dreams were destroyed even before he had a chance to follow them. He also recalls his first experiences of army life as a young recruit, where him and his classmates Kropp, Muller and Kemmerich trained under the command of Corporal Himmelstoss. They were forced to do humiliating chorse and endure harsh punishments daily. Even though the soldiers hated Coroporal Himmelstoss, they believed that he trained them to be pitiless and tough which were essential qualities to survive in the trenches.
As simple as this task, it takes its toll on every recruit due to the internal battle with their humanity. The character who readers follow Paul Baumer, represents complications the simple task entails. While fighting along the front line, Paul recognizes that “[they’ve] become wild beasts” (113) through the ferocious warfare. As an act of resistance and “with the butt of his rifle Kat smashes to pulp the face of one of the wounded machine-gunners. [They] bayonet the others before they have time to get out their bombs”(116).
