All Quiet on the Western Front Analysis In All Quiet on the Western Front, written by Erich Maria Remarque, the story revolves around young men who are fighting in World War I for the German army. Even though this book was written from a German’s perspective, there are many aspects of the book which Nazis are not fond of. Nazis were very passionate about their country and leader. They pushed their people forward into war. This book depicts the war and its brutal side. It shows the physical harm, psychological harm, and effects on families as a result of war. Because of these depictions, the Nazis were afraid that the citizens would learn about the horrid truths and be hesitant toward war. Because this is a war story, there is bound to include physical injuries from battle. For example, Franz Kemmerich is introduced early in the story, lying in a hospital bed with a thigh wound. Because the condition is so severe, the soldier’s leg gets amputated and he is eventually dying. “The leg is amputated. He looks ghastly, yellow and wan…Under the skin the life no longer pulses…Death is working through from within…His features have become uncertain and faint…” (Remarque 8). Here, the author explains how the soldier is slowly falling into death’s grip.
