“This book is not to be an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure… it is simply to tell of a generation of men, who even though they escaped shells, were destroyed by war” ( Remarque i ). In the novel the themes horror of war is prominently in the novel. In the novel mostly of every scene includes either some graphic description or a well- detailed portrayal of how horrific war can be if one is a soldier. Remarque incorporated this theme because he felt the need to write a book that showed people the effects of war and how it if affected the soldiers. The fact that one soldier can not anticipate what might happen next,if they live or perish it adds an edge that the audience can not fathom. In the text “ He fell in october 1918. On a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front. Then the army report confirmed itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front” ( Remarque 296 ). This is devastating when Paul, the main character, is shot and killed at the end of the novel. This was unexpected from the audience along with Paul himself. By including this plot twist in the novel, it shows that a single soldier does not know what is next for them. From the beginning of the novel, in introduces characters and by the end, they are all dead. This is a perfect representation that in war, one is not able to plan out what is ahead of them. The soldiers march into warfare blind because it is unexpected what their next move is. By having unexpected events, such as all of the characters ha was introduced to the audience in the novel, happen throughout the novel, the audience is to do nothing and wait to see whats next. The novel constantly refers to a time where the boys were in school learning about the war and having their teacher persuade them to enlist at such a young age. Once the boys have experienced war for a period of time, they realized that war is all the soldiers know. In the quote, “ I am young. I am twenty years old yet, I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and torture superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow” ( Remarque 263 ). The men are young and know nothing but war and the affects it has on others. By the soldiers enlisting in war at such a young age, they were not able to experience war. All they know is how to fight, how to do their best at staying alive, and constantly having to watch their back because they do not know what might be behind them. The diction in this passage gives the audience a more blunt way of describing what the soldiers had to deal with. By having the propaganda to be persuasive about men joining war, the kids would want to so they did. Therefore there were boys who as young as twelve years old that joined. Once the boys entered the battle ground, they were forced, in an instant, to grow up and lose all of the innocence they had due to the bos being exposed to a large amount of death along with the feeling that there is a possibility that they could perish in an instant. A loss of innocence at such a young age could affect the boys
