Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend Of Betrayal, Courage And Survival by Velma Wallis is a novel that highlights the themes of loyalty, old age, betrayal, and the power of friendship between women. The two women named Sa' and Ch'idzigyaak fight for their lives in the cold Alaskan territory, after their tribe decides to leave and label them as weak. The two women survive by thriving off each other’s friendship and knowledge to help weather the bitter cold. In the process of being left by their tribe The People many realizations are made by the women, that later shape their viewpoints on forgiveness. She found the strength to not stay resentful or bitter. She was graceful by meeting her daughter again with open arms. In my opinion, it could have been very easy to disown her child and her tribe. Both women were suspicious when they encountered the tribe member Daagoo again. Daagoo spoke of peace between The People and the two women. Both women were hesitant to make contact with the chief and the previous members again. However, they decided on speaking with the chief first and explaining that any interaction would be on their own terms. The chief agreed to the conditions and apologized for leaving the two old women to die. Sa and Chizigyaak forgave the people that hurt them the most. I think Vilma Wells wanted readers to know the importance of forgiveness. Forgiveness allows you to be free from anger. You cannot move forward without forgiveness. I think this rule applies in interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships by forgiving yourself and forgiving others for mistakes.
