An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was a story written by Ambrose Bierce. He wrote it to be a suspenseful and confusing short story. The suspense brought on by Bierce employed to clench one's attention throughout this short story by using numerous literary techniques. With his use of imagery Bierce displayed that, in his mind, Farquhar, while being hanged, still had all of his thoughts and he believed that he was escaping the army, bringing suspense to the story. Farquhar thought that the rope had snapped and that he had fallen into the water, he imagined himself escaping the military by swimming away.
He tells Farquhar that they have reached The Owl Creek Bridge. The "soldier" also explains that if anyone is caught interfering with the railroads or any of the construction, they will be hanged. Farquhar jokingly asked the soldier how would it be possible to destroy the bridge. The "soldier" tells him it would be easy to burn down the bridge. As part one comes to an ending the author reveals that the "soldier" was actually a federal scout, in other words a Yankee spy.

The story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce takes place in Alabama. Peyton Farquhar the protagonist of Beirce’s story is a man who is to be hanged and takes place on Owl Creek Bridge. Farquhar was told that anyone who tried interfering with the railroad construction that was happening on the bridge would be hanged.
The concept of time changes with traumatic events. The duration of these stretches an intermediate length, allowing one to remember former fallacies and lament on what led to this dire situation. In his short story, The Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce illustrates an execution and its effect on the mental processing of the victim.
Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose was a story about a 35 year old, confederate planter, slave owner, by the name of Peyton Fahrquhar. The theme of the story is in the time of death you end a home or where you want to be even if it's all in your head. There is one reasons as to why this theme is right. Firstly, I chose this because throughout the story you read about how he want to go back to his family and how he was only moving forward because of the thought of his family.
When a federal spy disguised as a confederate soldier tricks Farquhar into risking his life to become the hero he had always dreamed of, Farquhar is put in his unfortunate situation. Farquhar inability to recognize the difference between a federal spy and a confederate soldier leads him to the decision that results in his untimely death. The story itself gives the readers a false sense of hope that Farquhar might actually escape his own death. Palmisano illustrates the author's deception when he writes"Bierce does not overtly inform the reader that Farquhar's escape is a hallucination but expects that the careful reader will realize the impossibility of events described in the final section of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge". Bierce expresses his disdain for the deceptive tactics used during the civil war by causing the reader to feel remorse for Farquhar's death.
3. Two stories in which the tables turned are “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” and “Ballad of Birmingham”. The tables are turned pretty drastically in these two stories because lives are taken because of it. In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” Peyton Farquhar is caught for messing with Owl Creek Bridge and is going to be hanged for doing so. As he is falling with the noose around his neck the noose appears to break and Farquhar falls in to the Creek.
As you can tell from the title, something big happened at the Owl Creek Bridge, but you have to wait until the end of the story to find out the truth, or else you could be lost in someone’s daydream. The story had me intrigued by the different directions it could take you, but it all made sense in the end, and I discovered you sometimes have to dig a little deeper to find the whole truth about someone. Peyton Farquhar, a plantation owner in his mid-thirties, is being prepared for execution by hanging from an Alabama railroad bridge during the American Civil War. Farquhar, a supporter of the Confederacy, learns from a soldier that Union troops have seized the Owl Creek railroad bridge and repaired it. The soldier suggests that Farquhar might be able to burn the bridge down if he can slip past its guards.
The harsh and brutal side of the military and war is clear through Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. From the detailed descriptions of the soldiers’ procedures to the shocking twist shows us the heartlessness that war (in this case the Civil War) can hold. In the exposition of this story, the sentinels are described as being in a “support” position, “a formal and unnatural position, enforcing an erect carriage of the body” (21). This not only sets the scene for the reader, but it shows us the respect with which the soldiers seem to be treating Farquhar’s hanging. However, Bierce then calls death a “dignitary,” who is treated with “formal manifestations of respect” (22).

The order is to stay away from bridges during a Civil War advance, and Farquhar is conspiring to blow up a bridge. Farquhar’s demise is foreshadowed using several literary techniques, such as preternatural plot elements and imagery. To start, preternatural plot elements are implied to foreshadow Farquhar’s death when he hears the distant sound of something striking a metallic object while he is awaiting his execution.

Farquhar shows his will to live during the events after the hanging. The story then goes through the events in Farquhars mind as he drifts away from life. The theme of this story is that perception is not always reality.
Peter Stoicheff seeks to to go into great depth about some of the science behind the dream sequence in “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. Stoicheff relates the sequence to a revolutionary study of dreams done by a French writer named Louis Ferdinand Alfred Maury. Stoicheff expands on Maury’s theory that dreams are caused by out external stimuli by relating subtle details in the story in relation to the real life trauma that the protagonist, Peyton Faquahar, quickly feels. Stoicheff finally analyzes the dream sequence in the context of a dream theory by Sigmond Freud and examines the factors that lead the reader to believe that the freedom was just a cruel joke.
Throughout the story the main character dreams of instances where him and the army he fought for would triumph as heroes and the world would know of their bravery. In reality, as Crane shows, war is still cruel and filled with death.
The story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, the narrator uses a limited omniscient point of view to deeply describe Peyton’s thoughts and feelings. The narrator does not go into details of any of the soldiers thoughts. So we are forced to focus on Peyton’s thoughts as he faces his finals minutes of life. The narrator goes into deep details in the story, that sets a precise time for the actions that take place.
