Goodbye Darkness is a memoir written by William Manchester. Manchester was a U.S. Marine in the Pacific during World War II. What truly made this book stand out for me was how deep it goes in philosophically. For instance, it talks about the concepts of survivor’s guilt. When on the patrol on the Guadalcanal, Manchester’s entire group that he fought with was struck by a Japanese mortar leaving him the only survivor.
“Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever,” affirms Anthony Doerr revealing a story buried in World War II through his novel All the Light We Cannot See. Doerr is the Winner of the Pulitzer Award for fiction because of this exquisitely written novel, which transports you back to the 1940s through the author’s imagination and magical writing style. The story takes place in Saint-Malo and follows the parallel lives of two gifted children. Werner, a German orphan boy that his remarkable radio skills grant him the opportunity to attend the Hitler Youth Academy.
Paul Boyer, the author of By the Bomb’s Early Light, has an unusually high level of expertise on the subject of atomic bombs. He is an American biochemist, analytical chemist, and a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is at the top of his field, and is a perfect candidate to write this book. Not only will he be an expert in the science of atomic bombs, but he will know the history of this kind of technology. Paul Boyer’s main idea in this book is more of a discussion of Nuclear Policy and a look back at the nuclear age.

The book A Quality Of Light by Richard Wagamese focuses on the unethical issues Indigenous peoples are facing in Canada while telling the story of a man named Joshua Kane. There are many issues this book touches on, one being the mistreatment that Indigenous communities are facing in Canada, which needs to change. In my writing, I plan to focus on the unethical wrong-doings that Canada has done to the Indigenous peoples.
Anthony Doerr uses his media to show what we can see and describe what we cannot see in his novel, All The Light We Cannot See using plot devices such as disabilities to help illlustrate his metaphor of light being humanity and knowledge and moral good. This entire subject is written while the characters are experiencing the original perspective of 1940's Europe, during the brutal time of World War II. An old friend of the narrator "Robert,'' is the blind man in the story. When the sighted man tries to explain what a cathedral is like to the blind man, his words fail. One man relies on vision to communicate, the other does not. It was like they spoke different languages. At the end of the story when the narrator says "My eyes were still closed.
The narrator placed himself in Robert’s shoes and realized how inaccurate his perception about Robert was. What Light by Jay Asher had a big impact on me. It taught me not judge someone based off rumors or their past. In the book, Sierra was starting to fall for Caleb. Heather, Sierra's best friend, specifically told Sierra that she shouldn’t like Caleb because of a rumor she had heard. The rumor that most of the community believes is that Caleb went after his sister with a knife.
On December 21, 2012, Los Angeles Times published “Let There Be Dark” adapted from Paul Bogard. In this article, Paul persuades his audience that darkness should be preserved by using evidence, reasoning and persuasive elements. Paul uses the natural environment as evidence to persuade his readers that darkness should be preserved. For example, Bogard states in paragraph 4 “The rest of the world depends on darkness as well, including nocturnal and crepuscular species of birds, insects, mammals, fish and reptiles.” This is convincing evidence because he explains the importance of darkness in the everyday lives of many different species in the world and the absence of this darkness would lead to an unstable ecosystem.
A GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) is where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. It basically means that anything that includes transferring genes which comes from bacteria, viruses, animals, insects or humans and it is also considered as a transgenic organisms. Examples of GM crops are Soybeans, GM maize, GM wheat, and Rapeseed. There is problems associated with the use of GM crops. That this process might sometimes provokes allergic reactions, or high level of toxin naturally found it, other people think it is morally wrong to move genes between different species and it won’t be a good choice of vegetarian people and people with religious beliefs.
However, the story takes an unpredicted and meaningful turn at the end when the narrator see things from a blind man’s standpoint. Since the beginning of the story, the narrator does not like the idea of having in his house a blind man. He does not know how to socialize with blind people because his idea of blindness came from the movies. He thinks blind people move slowly and they never laugh.
“I wasn’t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And being blind bothered me” (104) The narrator has no knowledge of experiencing seeing a blind person. “My idea of blindness came from the movies” (104).
In Jorge Luis Borges 's essay,”Blindness”, the author describes his feelings toward his disability. His primary audience are readers who want to learn more about the author disability and for people who are struggling with similar disabilities. His purpose is trying to interpret how the author dealt with his blindness and sharing his personal life to the Readers. Borges does this by using flashbacks and interprets the flashbacks and the challenges that he had to go through. He goes back and forth talking about the positives and negative of dealing with his blindness.
