Annexed, by Sharon Dogar, is a novel that is written in the style of a journal by Peter van Pels during the Holocaust. This piece of literature took place in the small hiding space behind a bookcase in Amsterdam. The main character Peter is a Jewish boy who went into hiding with his mother, father, and the Frank family. While hiding from the German Nazi’s during World War II, Peter quickly learns to never take things for granted, even something as small as fresh air or daylight. They live in a series of small spaces that substitute as their bedrooms, bathroom, and kitchen. When going into the Annex, the Van Pels and the Franks could only take a limited amount of belongings with them which left them with next to nothing. Then they later find out that the Nazi’s emptied out their former houses without leaving a single thing behind. The one thing that seemed to belong to everyone was the radio. The eight people would squish in together every night and listen to see how the war is progressing. Continuously, in the book, the war advances to the point where the Allies have made it into the war and are coming to liberate the jews. Several months go down the road and everything seems fine in the Annex, the space behind the bookcase, until late at night there is a break-in in the workshop downstairs. As the novel continues on, several break-ins continue to happen leading to the stress and tensions throughout the Annex. This narrative contains true historical facts as well as fabricated information in the story.
