The novel Atlanita by Ally Condie was written on purpose to show how we tend to look upon our own self-interest as suppose to a whole society. The genre of this story is based on a dystopian world, but is renowned in the young adult fiction section. Citizens of Atlantia must follow the orders of the Minister and Councils’ put in charge. In the story the two main characters (twins) can choose either live above or below. Throughout the story Rio-the siren- makes a promise to her sister Bay. That promise is prevalent through the whole narrative. It is to bring back peace to both cities below and above. She says in chapter 1: “I promise Bay.” For as long as Rio can recall, she has always wished that she’d see the sky above- life beyond the underwater city of Atlantia. The main character Rio sees below through her own eyes with scrupulous precaution. She has encountered various situations such like: personal, family, etc. For example Rio says: “I am a siren.” Sirens are considered the elites; so they bare more responsibly than just an ordinary native in Atlantia. In Atlantia siren children are given to the Council to raise. As for Rio her mother Oceana did not want to give her up, after knowing that someday she would be able to reunite the alienated societies. Moreover, Rio references to this rhetorical question: “Could there be others like me?”(Chapter 10) This goes on to show her growing concern of wanting to feel accepted in the society. Rio also says this other statement: I’m the last, so there’s no reason I shouldn’t be the first. The first to go above. This quote strongly emphasizes the fact that Rio has such a drastic impact on her contribution in Atlantia. She bares all of the weight and so she should take careful measures in dealing with the societal/ environmental
